An LA Times Puff Piece On Illegal Immigration

Friday, June 8th, 2012

The top section of today’s LATEXTRA section of the dead-tree edition of the Los Angeles Times, above the fold, features the story of Maria Gomez, an illegal immigrant that has managed to graduate from UCLA with a degree in Architecture. Actually, considering her circumstances, that’s a mighty impressive accomplishment. However… that’s not the gist of the piece. Here’s a taste:

At 26, she was getting her master’s in architecture from one of the nation’s top schools. But the triumph felt hollow, her sense of achievement tangled up with bitterness and fear.

The country that made you hide like a criminal and the country that promised to let you stand tall atop your talent — she’d grown up with both, somehow believed in both. But now, about to be pitched into a job market where she could not legally work, she felt dread in her stomach.

The rest of the piece details her early life and her collegiate journey, all while extolling the dangers of her being illegal. She even became an activist for the “Dream Act” legislation (where WE the taxpayers would be on the hook for the higher-education cost for illegals) — the LAT does love their progressive activists.

It ends, (all three pages of it online!) with her just missing out on a paying job, again because she’s illegal. Hmmm… what to do, what to do?

There’s real tragedy here. A child is brought into the country at the age of eight and taught to hide in plain site to avoid deportation. Our society makes it possible for her to get a first-class education in a field that could provide her an excellent living. One would think that Mexico would be clamoring for for folks like these to come, work and be a productive part of that country. Of course there’s this – who in their right mind, after living here all their lives, would want to go live and work in Mexico right now?

I have no answers for this dilemma, I’m just wondering if this was the most important “Late-Breaking” story of June 8th, 2012… or, is it just more water-carrying by the MSM for President Obama? Some convenient distraction from the Wisconsin results, the mess at Justice, the wide-spread predictions of Economic Armageddon next January — all of the above?

Just askin’.

Obama’s Gunwalker Scandal & The “90% Lie”

Tuesday, June 21st, 2011

Department of Alcohol, Tobacco & FirearmsI haven’t been following this “Gunwalker” thing at all, but an Instapundit link this AM to Bob Owens’ piece at Pajamas Media is a pretty thorough wrap up of what just may be the Obama administration’s scandal of scandals.

This operation could not have taken place without the cooperation of the Department of Homeland Security — DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano should bear responsibility for her agency’s actions. U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder has apparently lied to Congress about when he knew of Gunwalker, and considering the scope of the operation it is implausible that he was not involved in its implementation.

It is only reasonable to believe that knowledge of this operation did not stop with cabinet-level officials. If the directors of so many executive branch agencies were involved in this scandal, as it appears they might have been, it is plausible that knowledge of this scheme — perhaps the origination? — came directly from the White House.

One might ask what our laws demand of officials complicit in a plot that used the power of U.S. law enforcement agencies to pressure gun shops into selling weapons to narco-terrorists. If this is indeed the case, impeachment and resignations are just the beginning of the process of seeking justice. Those who authorized this operation and facilitated what was essentially a gunrunning operation to achieve what appears to be a political goal may very well be guilty of a number of felonies — and wanted for extradition to face justice in Mexican courts as well.

Under Article III, Section 3 of the Constitution, any person who levies war against the United States or adheres to its enemies by giving them aid and comfort is guilty of the act of treason. Gunwalker supplied narco-terrorists on our southern border with thousands of firearms.

All of this to foist onto the American public, with the help of the mainstream media of course, what is called “the 90% lie“, ”the administration’s false accusation that 90 percent of the guns used in cartel crime could be traced to U.S. gun shops.” It was an all-out effort to cause a public outcry against the 2nd Amendment and to increase demands for ever more stringent gun control laws.

Seeing how this administration’s Justice Department has conducted itself over the last 2-1/2 years there’s little hope that anyone at Holder’s level or above will face scrutiny, unless the House and Senate’s efforts to collect documents and hold hearings bear fruit.

Odd as it seems, CBS News has been on this for months:

CBS News has learned that House and Senate investigators have descended upon Arizona for their probe into the so-called “Gunwalker” scandal. They’re gathering interviews from witnesses, including ATF insiders and area gun shop owners. Sources tell CBS News the congressional investigators are frustrated by what they view as across-the-board stonewalling by government agencies which have refused to provide information in the investigation. Government officials have said they won’t provide information while their own investigations are ongoing.

Getting back to the opening of Bob Owen’s piece, funny how the “little things” can bring down an entire administration:

Major scandals don’t always have the most dramatic beginnings. Andrew Johnson was impeached for replacing the sitting secretary of war; Richard Nixon’s collapse started with a breaking and entering. Bill Clinton’s infamy was guaranteed for quibbling over the definition of a common verb.

It now appears that high-ranking officials in the Obama administration may be writing the end of their careers and risking a life behind bars by arguing about the technical definition of “walking” firearms.

Here’s hoping . . .

Obama’s Columbia Years — Insight Into His Russia/Nuclear Disarmament Fantasies

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

Yesterday Andy McCarthy at The Corner wrote the following about President Barack Obama’s tenure at Columbia University which was finally covered, at teeny bit, in the NY Times:

During the campaign, I wrote a piece called “Why Won’t Obama Talk About Columbia? — The years he won’t discuss may explain the Ayers tie he keeps lying about.” So now, nearly six months into the Obama presidency, the mainstream media has finally done a bit of the candidate background reporting it declined to do during the campaign — other than in Wasilla — and whaddya know? The New York Times unearthed a 1983 article called, “Breaking the War Mentality,” that Columbia student Barack Obama wrote for a campus newspaper. The article shows that Obama dreaded American “militarism” and its “military-industrial interests,” while effusing enthusiasm for the dangerously delusional nuclear-freeze movement.

Moreover, while indicating a preference for the political wisdom of reggae singer Peter Tosh over Ronald Reagan or Scoop Jackson, Obama bewailed the “narrow focus” of anti-militarism activists, worrying that they were targeting the “symptoms” rather than the real “disease,” namely, America’s underlying economic and political injustice:

Seeing as Obama is currently in Russia, getting Putin’s title mixed up with Medvedev’s and extolling the virtues of the former KGB head while at the same time laying the groundwork for unilateral nuclear disarmament by U.S. — whadda think, that the rest of the world is gonna disarm because we say, “Pretty please?” Now, all Prez BHO has to do is agree to stop the missile defense installation in Poland and the Ruskies will play nice and get rid of 1/3 of their arsenal. Why, he’s even declared that this is such a big time emergency that maybe the Senate’s ratification would have to be side-stepped for expediency’s sake.

The Anchoress has an idea of why the Obama administration is in such a hurry to make this a done deal:

Well, that is, if the deal actually does put in place an effective verification system and doesn’t amount to a de facto unilateral disarmament. With exactly five months to win Senate approval, the effort by the Obama White House in floating this idea now makes it sound like Obama wants to give away the store in order to score some points with his 1980s no-nukes agenda. And as much as the Democrats howled over the supposed devotion of George Bush to a “unitary executive,” Obama seems to have no trouble bypassing the check on executive power for treaty negotiation written explicitly into the Constitution, in Article II, Section 2.

Such a deal! Still, if you consider Obama’s proclivities from his Columbia years, all this make perfect sense. Would have been nice to know some of this last Summer and Fall, eh? Laer at Cheat-Seeking Missiles calls for a whole lot more lookin’ into Obama’s collegiate past!

So now, way too belatedly, the NYT has found one measly article and written a story about it. Obama was in college for eight long years and left many, many more footprints than this one article. The marginalized media can never overcome the black mark [can I say “black mark?”] earned from its lack of negative coverage during the campaign – but that shouldn’t stop it from finally covering the story now.

Our MSM’s Obama coverage has been constant adulation — almost as disgusting as what they’re giving today to the memorial service for the “King of Pop”. As the American public will begin to find out as the college years of President Obama are revealed over time, they’ve bought themselves one hell of a big “pig in a poke”! McCarthy wraps it up perfectly.

Who knew?

Nice as it is of the media to scratch the surface journalists should have been mining over a year ago, the current disastrous straits for the country are that — as Jen Rubin contends at contentions — the Obama who is off to Russia to cut unratifiable deals with the recrudescent Soviets hasn’t really changed in the ensuing quarter-century.

ABC News — All Barack, All The Time? WTF?

Tuesday, June 16th, 2009

ABC- All Barack ChannelEffing-Amazing! Effing-Unbelievable!

On the night of June 24, the media and government become one, when ABC turns its programming over to President Obama and White House officials to push government run health care — a move that has ignited an ethical firestorm!

Highlights on the agenda:

ABCNEWS anchor Charlie Gibson will deliver WORLD NEWS from the Blue Room of the White House.

The network plans a primetime special — ‘Prescription for America’ — originating from the East Room, exclude opposing voices on the debate.

Michell Malkin writes:

ABC: The All Barack Channel.

Rush calls ‘em our state-run media.

I call it government-controlled stenography.

Sharpen your pencils, boys and girls, and look spiffy when Dear Leader comes to greet you.

From the Drudge story comes this statement, part of a complaint by Ken McKay, the RNC chief of staff, to the head of ABC News:

In the absence of opposition, I am concerned this event will become a glorified infomercial to promote the Democrat agenda. If that is the case, this primetime infomercial should be paid for out of the DNC coffers. President Obama does not hold a monopoly on health care reform ideas or on free airtime. The President has stated time and time again that he wants a bipartisan debate. Therefore, the Republican Party should be included in this primetime event, or the DNC should pay for your airtime.

Drew over at AoSHQ is all over it, too: ABC “News” Whores Itself To White House On Health Care (With Apologies To Any Honest Whores Who Are Insulted By The Comparisson)

Looks like NBC just got some competition to be Obama’s network booty call of choice.

I don’t know what else there is to say about this (I’m sure Ace will have some thoughts). It’s not like we don’t know the networks are in the bag for Obama, they have been for over a year. It is hardly surprising that ABC is simply trying to get in on Brian Williams’ sloppy seconds.

People are dying in Iran in search of their freedom and we’re laying down ours like it’s nothing.

Boycott ABC and its advertisers. Screw these guys!

[Update: Bookworm also is calling for an ABC News / ABC / Disney (why didn’t I think of that one?) boycott — the discussion over there is getting pretty hot and heavy, too! Way to go!]

Obama & Hugo Sittin’ In A Tree . . . Can I Puke Yet?

Obama with Hugo Chavez

My, my, my . . . our prez has been a busy boy lately. Like in the pic above — pressin’ the flesh with his new bestest buddy in the whole, well . . . make that the Western World, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez. You know Hugo. He’s the guy that stood up before the UN General Assembly and declared that he could still smell the stench from Bush being there the day before. The guy that has turned Venezuela from a democracy into a modern dictatorship. The smiles say it all for this ol’ Okie. Bush never would have played up to Chavez like that, although I will say that W’s little smooch and hand holding with the Saudi king was certainly over the top.

Not to be outdone in the “We all just LOVE Obama” sweepstakes, today’s LA Times gives us: Obama begins leading America in a new direction, a not even thinly disguised love fest for celebrating the Might O’s first 100 days — if still a tad early on that. Such as this fine bit of journalism on page one, above the fold:

Direct, assertive and utterly self-assured, Obama has used his broad popularity, a driving ambition and a sweeping agenda to move America in a wholly new direction.

Just shy of 100 days in office, he has ordered the closure of the Guantanamo Bay military prison and a troop withdrawal from Iraq; made it easier for women to sue for job discrimination; eased a ban on stem cell research; extended healthcare coverage to millions of children; ousted the head of General Motors; reached out to the Muslim world; moved to ease tensions with Cuba; traveled to Canada, Europe, Turkey and Latin America; and set aside huge tracts of wilderness for federal protection.

More broadly, Obama has seized on the worst economic crisis since the 1930s — exploiting it, critics say — and set out to reshape major aspects of everyday life: the price we pay to see a doctor, the size of our children’s classrooms, the fuel we put in our cars.

If Obama’s history-making campaign offered hope, the nation’s first black president has delivered audacity; his vision of an activist government has been so vast, Washington now guarantees not only savings accounts but brakes on a Buick.

“You can carp and gripe,” said Allan Lichtman, a historian at Washington’s American University. “But you really have to go back as far as Franklin Roosevelt for this much coming out of a newly elected president.”

And Sheeeeeeeeet Howdy! They ain’t done yet, as this is the first of a 3-part series! Can I possibly keep my breath bated enough to wait until tomorrow for another slug o’ Obamadmiration?

Michelle Malkin writes: Obama is hanging with Chavez and company this weekend to “seek a new beginning with Cuba.” Hmmm, even more hangin’ with dictator homies. Oh, and here is some video of Prez Barry getting his “gift” from Hugo.

Allahpundit at Hot Air remarks:

The book’s in Spanish, by the way. El Presidente couldn’t even be bothered to find a translation. Food for thought from Tapper: “Can you imagine the world outrage if a US President gave a book in English to a non-English speaking leader?”

Oh well, to quote “Annie Hall” — La tee da, la tee da . . .

WaPo Says Obama Passes First Security Test? What About Tests 2 — 6? Not So Much!

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

Yesterday the Washington Post ran a story [registration required] saying that our Prez passed his first security exam — ya know, when he didn’t stop three amazing Navy Seal snipers from doin’ their duty and wipin’ out some pirate scumbags with extreme prejudice. The Mil-bloggers at This Ain’t Hell disagree with the WaPo, and give The Mighty ‘O’ failing marks for:

  • Undeterred Somali pirates hijacking three more ships today!
  • Pakistans’ new Swat Valley Taliban kill-free zone with Sharia for everyone!
  • Taliban & Al Qaeda training bases setting up in Swat, threatening the Pakistan military!
  • A totally lame-ass response to the No. Korea missile launch gets Kin Jong Il’s juices flowin’!
  • Dropping US to Cuba funding restrictions which will bag the Castro brothers some extra filty-American lucre!

The MSM seems to not care less. Addressing that, author John Lilyea comments:

I’m glad that Captain Phillips is free, I’m glad Obama didn’t screw that up – but all the rest of this crap should scare the media to death – and they should say so instead of looking for nothing but positives.

YUP — in Obamaland — it’s passing grades for everybody from the MSM — as long as everybody is Barack Obama. Maybe, just maybe, we got us some media bias happenin’ here? Hmmm, just maybe . . .

Like, it ever stopped happenin’ after the election.

At least the Onion knows which side of the bagel gets the cream cheese!

“What exactly is the news hook here?” asked Rick Kaplan, executive producer of the CBS Evening News. “Is this an upbeat human-interest story about a ‘day in the life’ of a bloodthirsty president who likes to kill people? Or is it more of an examination of how Obama’s unusual upbringing in Hawaii helped to shape the way he would one day viciously butcher two helpless citizens in their own home?”

Double heh!
