Anti Prop-8 Activists Take No Prisioners — No Film At Eleven

OK, let’s get serious here. For weeks we’ve been telling you about the poor manager of the El Coyote Cafe in Hollywood, Margie Christoffersen, who made the “horrific mistake” of supporting CA Prop 8, the initiative to restore the traditional meaning of marriage as between a man and a woman. Christoffersen, who is a devout Mormon, gave a measly $100 to the campaign. For her sin, she was accosted by a group of LGBT activists inside the restaurant who demanded that she apologize for making the donation, which she did. However, she refused to say that she had changed her mind on the merits of Prop 8, so they harassed her and boycotted the cafe until poor Margie left her job — which she had held for 17 plus years. Evidently, even that isn’t enough for these Anti-Prop 8 zealots. [H/t: Michelle Malkin]

The writer of that article, and also the LA Times editorial board were against Prop 8, which passed with over 52% majority vote this last Nov. 4th. The Anti-Prop 8 crowd has been up in arms ever since, outing those they find on public-access lists that supported Prop 8 with donations. They couldn’t win the debate, so now they are using coercion and bullying to stifle those who supported traditional marriage. The Mormons are taking an especially big hit as they seem to be easy targets, even though Evangelical and Catholic groups were also strong supporters. John at Article 6 Blog writes this:

Protests are, in and of themselves, on the edge of violence. Further, actual violence has been far from isolated. Vandalism was fairly widespread, traffic was disrupted, people have lost their jobs, and many active in the YES campaign received threatening phone calls or direct personal threats. So maybe it was not the Watts Riots or the post-RodneyKing riots, but it was definitively a mob-based effort to enforce its will with inherent threats of violence at those extreme levels. This is a bit like arguing that because I only beat someone up, it’s not that big a deal when compared to Charles Manson.

This letter to the editor in today’s LAT is representative of these out-of-control folks:

It would be laudable if citizens could donate to a cause without intimidation, but this has never been the case.

Your editorial mentions the plight of Scott Eckern, late of the California Musical Theatre in Sacramento, who was forced to resign as a result of his donating to Proposition 8. You ask: What if the shoe were on the other foot and he were targeted because he was gay?

Well, the shoe has been on the other foot for ages now — people lose their jobs, and sometimes their lives, because they happen to be gay. That’s hardly news. What is news is that gays are flexing their political muscle.

Because political donations are a matter of public record, anyone who contributes to a cause should be prepared to weather the possible consequences. I don’t think that’s a bad thing. Unintended results can spur people to think. Who knows? Maybe next time they’ll reconsider before they contribute.

Gotta love the Left — only their opinion matters. Only their way is the correct way.
