Fisher-Price Doll Says, “Islam Is The Light”?
I was checking out some blogs that I’ve lost track of and stumbled across this story at Gates of Vienna. Evidently there is a talking doll on the market, Fisher-Price Little Mommy Real Loving Baby Cuddle and Coo Doll, and one of its cute little coos is, “Islam is the light.”
Wow! Way to go Mattel (owner of F-P). A grassroots campaign, MAMA (Moms Ask Mattel for Accountability), is trying to gets these chatty little dears off the market, off store shelves or at least have warning stickers placed on the packages to warn shoppers what they could be buying.
Lots of controversy brewing here, and Mattel keeps digging an ever deeper hole. Head over to MAMA to hear slowed down versions of sound clips recorded from purchased dolls and decide for yourself.
Here’s the MAMA mission statement:
WHO WE ARE: Moms Ask Mattel for Accountability – MAMA -is a public education effort by concerned families to protect children from being invited to join Islam, without their parents’ knowledge or permission. Mattel, the largest toy maker in the world, is still selling a toy that says “Islam is the Light” – the Little Mommy Real Loving Baby Cuddle & Coo Doll, in spite of protests by parents, media and store owners. We ask Mattel to recall the toy immediately during the 2008 Christmas season. If Mattel will not recall the toy, we ask retailers to remove it from store shelves. If retailers keep selling the toy, we ask them attach the MAMA labels to the toy packaging, so parents are not subject to what may be deceptive advertising by omission of materially important information about the toy’s risks.
{…}
WE ARE TAKING ACTION: MAMA has sent a letter to the Federal Trade Commission and the Securities and Exchange Commissions asking them to require Mattel to recall the doll immediately, or to require Mattel and retailers to label the doll to fully disclose the information that it says “Islam is the light.”
Join our campaign to get this toy recalled by Mattel, or if retailers insist on carrying it, to get labels placed on the toy so parents and grandparents know what they are buying for their children. Truth-in-advertising for this toy is of material importance to the post-9/11 consumer, especially to the post 9/11 parent who purchases a toy in absence of any warning that the toy advocates Islam to young children.
MAMA’s been at this since October. Due to the focus on the election cycle I missed it entirely. If you’re buying a doll for your daughter, granddaughter, niece or just a friend’s child, be careful what you buy. Unless, of course, you’re A-OK with a loved toy telling your little girl, “Islam is the light.”
