Barack Obama Is My President — Not By Choice Mind You, But Still — That’s The Way It Is!
I had a hard time writing that title to this post — last night’s national election results are a bitter pill for this ol’ Okie to swallow. Just before going to bed I contemplated putting up a short post of congratulations but just couldn’t bear it at the time. Don’t get me wrong, I certainly can’t and won’t deny the historical implications of our country electing the first African-American POTUS, and that part doesn’t bother me one little bit — I just wish that it hadn’t been this particular African-American, because I disagree with probably 99% of his policy objectives and core beliefs. So, as they say in the bra business, “tough titties” Okie, the Dems won, won HUGE, and you lost. Buck up, stiffen the upper lip, “gird you loins” as the VP-elect Joe Biden likes to say, and get on with becoming part of the loyal opposition.
Was there any ray of light, any reason to hope last night? Well, out here in the granola state it looks like we actually passed Prop 8 and amended the state constitution to restore the meaning of Marriage as between a man and a woman, effectively outlawing same-sex marriage in CA. As for the status of the 18,000 plus same-sex coupes that decided to roll the dice and tie some sort of knot after the CA Supreme Court threw out 2000’s Prop 22 earlier this year, who knows. Maybe they can all hoof it to MA and re-tie their knots there. I don’t care. A tiny bit o’ the culture preserved will have to be enough for now. Florida and Arizona also banned same-sex marriage. The attempts to limit/regulate abortion failed in CA and Nebraska.
BTW — as I’m hearing Dennis Prager say on air right now, it is amazing how many Obama voters voted YES on Prop 8. One and one-half million! That means something important.
Also, it looks like the GOP has held at least 40 seats in the Senate, with 4 contests still undecided. In MN, Coleman is only 500 votes ahead of the pathetic Al Franken, guaranteed to force a recount. Someone better watch that one very carefully so that this doesn’t become Washington 2008, cause if they can’t win it, they’ll sure try to steal it. Speaking of the state of Washington, the sick can now off themselves if they so desire.
John McCain was his gracious, classy self as he conceded to President-elect Barack Obama last night. I didn’t get to listen to Obama’s acceptance speech as the wife was done with all the politics stuff and we ended up watching reruns of The Dog Whisperer. It looks like the President-elect was gracious in his remarks to Senator McCain and Governor Palin:
Senator McCain fought long and hard in this campaign. And he’s fought even longer and harder for the country that he loves. He has endured sacrifices for America that most of us cannot begin to imagine. We are better off for the service rendered by this brave and selfless leader.
I congratulate him; I congratulate Governor Palin for all that they’ve achieved. And I look forward to working with them to renew this nation’s promise in the months ahead.
I hope so. BTW — if you need a place to cry, gloat, vent or just comment with others on the election, The Anchoress has an open thread with the only caveat being no browbeating of President Bush.
My blogging friend Laer at Cheat-Seeking Missiles saw something in the President-elect’s speech that I’ve been referring to with my The Candidate Photoshops, that now that it’s over and the Dems have won — “What are we gonna do now?”
Had John McCain pulled off the win, he would have been bouncing all over the stage at the Phoenician with his big grin an his stiff-shouldered thumbs-up, happy in victory, ready to move forward.
That was not the Barack Obama we saw last night in Grant Park. While his speech was, as we’ve come to expect, beautifully written, his smiles were fleeting; his oratory subdued; his gestures tight and controlled.
It was the image of a man who suddenly realizes that his meteoric rise to the top is complete and now, for the first time, it won’t be about campaigning, but about getting real work done – work he’s never done before; work that’s going to be much harder than he ever imagined.
Israel is striking Gaza from the air for the first time in 5 months and Hamas is sending rockets into Israel. Iran is sending us some warnings. Looks to me like Dubya has some unfinished business to attend to in the next 2-1/2 months. Looks like the President-elect will be in the hot seat from day one.
Slublog over at Ace is saying what I’m feeling:
As for myself, after a brief bout with Obama Derangement Syndrome as the results came in, I decided I couldn’t do it. Sure, I’ll photoshop stupid pictures, criticize our new president with vigor and joy, and work to ensure that conservatives are a thorn in his side, but like I said last night, I won’t hate him for a simple reason.
I love this country too much to do to President-Elect Obama what the left did to President Bush, John McCain and Sarah Palin. We’re better than that.
Yes. WE. Are.
And at the end of the day, there’s no way that this coming administration could ever deliver what they have promised to their intoxicated followers. Steven Den Beste at Chizumatic makes that point very well.
And it ain’t possible for the Democrats to deliver what’s been promised. Gonna be a hell of a lot of disillusioned lefties out there. A lot of people who felt they were deceived. A lot of people who will eventually realize that the Obama campaign was something of a cult.
Disillusionment will turn to a feeling of betrayal. And that will, in turn, convert to anger.
In the mean time, Obama and Congressional Democrats will do things that cause harm, but very little of it will be irreversible.
I would have enjoyed watching lefty heads explode if McCain had won. But we’re going to see lefty heads exploding anyway; it’s just going to take longer.
And finally, Michelle Malkin gives us our marching orders:
1) Oppose the Democrats’ next stimulus boondoggle.
2) Oppose Obama’s windfall profits tax proposal.
3) Oppose new bailouts for states deep in debt.
4) Oppose new foreclosure prevention measures that will simply provide perverse incentives for borrowers to walk away and delay a needed market correction.
5) No more federal loan guarantees for corporations[.]
After all that, I want to end this on an even-keel note, so I’ll quote Hugh Hewitt’s congratulations post from last night:
It is an extraordinary thing, an achievement that will be recognized a hundred years hence, that Barack Obama has won the White House. Even those of us who opposed him, and who will no doubt be opposed to many of his policy objectives over the next four years, must pause and say congratulations on an improbable, amazing rise.
Every American ought to pray for wisdom and judgment for President-elect Obama, for his safety and the safety of his country, and for the continued prosperity and greatness of America.
Pray for President-elect Barack Obama, and pray for the United States of America.
