Hugh Hewitt On Why Obama Doesn’t “Get It” About The Financial Crisis
I’m certainly no financial guru, but I get the gist of what Hugh Hewitt is saying even though I might not grasp the full extent of it — that doesn’t make it any less true, and certainly doesn’t make it any less troubling when applied to someone that wants to be the leader of the free world.
Obama’s halting response to yesterday’s dramatic announcement`by John McCain followed by his about-face and agreement to attend the meeting convened by President Bush even as he insists that tomorrow’s debate go forward reveals much more than standard operating bumbling by Obama when the script he’s been reading from unexpectedly changes.
Obama appears to genuinely not grasp the stakes here. He is not acting like a leader who understands the risks the country faces. And this is not surprising giving his experience gap when it comes to money, work, and savings much less finance.
{…}
Obama’s inability to understand the genuine fear in the middle class and to respond appropriately and with a priority on protecting the long-and-painfully accumulated assets of the savings culture should be a huge warning flare to the electorate.
Obama just doesn’t get it, and really cannot be expected to get it. He comes out of a career in the professional liberal-to-leftist political class spent tending to the needs and crises of the urban poor and the academic elites and special interest groups of the Chicago machine. His life growing up was not spent among the small business owners and white collar savers that mark so much of suburban, small town and rural America. He has zero experience with real business, and he’s not worried about the college funds of his girls.
Obama revealed a great deal yesterday beyond his obvious inability to react quickly to unanticipated events. He showed us a profound ignorance not just of the financial crisis but of the people it threatens to injure and injure deeply. [Emph mine]
Meanwhile, back in DC, the games continue. According to Michell Malkin, Harry Reid (D-Nev), Senate Majority Leader, is trying to sneak the ban on oil shale production into the financial bailout legislation being negotiated today and quotes this response from Americans For Prosperity:
Somebody needs to ask Harry Reid how blocking private companies from creating good jobs and lowering the cost of energy for millions of American families will do anything to get our economy back on track. No wonder Congressional approval levels are at historic lows and we find ourselves in this economic situation.
Malkin and Co. are hell-bent on getting this bailout plan killed. Can’t say I blame them. Why does it seem that John Q. Public has to bail out every ne’re-do-well public or private that makes a financial mistake? If only the stakes weren’t so very high we could let the cards fall where they may. However, it sure isn’t very encouraging when the Sec. of the Treasury and Chairman of the Board of Governors of the United States Federal Reserve start throwing around the “D”-word — depression. Yipes! John McCain is back there to help broker the deal that will get Republicans on board to hammering out a compromise and get something in place before the lemmings on Wall Street start jumping out the windows, metaphorically speaking of course. The Democrats are claiming that McCain is grandstanding, that Obama’s wish to continue with the campaign should be honored and the debate held as scheduled tomorrow night. Dick Morris comments:
Offensively, [McCain] has placed himself at the epicenter of the only issue on the national agenda – proactive action to stop a total international financial collapse.
Obama’s response to McCain’s initiative is lame. As with his initial reaction to Sarah Palin, Obama has miscalculated. While he tries to spin McCain’s move as a mere response to his initiative, it was the Republican who first issued the call for a suspension of the campaigns.
Both McCain and Obama will now go to Washington. McCain on his own initiative. Obama as a result of the president’s call for an economic summit.
But it is McCain who will play the proactive role. Obama will come to Washington, but will keep one foot outside the Beltway.
Even though the president has called both candidates to Washington to save the country, Obama continues to campaign. Politics as usual.
He doesn’t want to cancel the debate. He would debate while the markets burn.
McCain is going to work while Obama is phoning it in.
Now, one last comment on the McCain/Obama-go-back-to-DC event. It was reported last night, at least on Fox News, that President Bush had personally demanded invited Barry O to be involved in today’s meetings, since good ol’ All-About-The-”O”-bama had previously declined McCain’s request for a joint appearance on Capital Hill (gee, they both are Senators BTW!) Now, if you get your news via our local rag, the LATimes, you just didn’t get that tasty tidbit of information about the Chosen One.
By evening, both candidates had decided to head back to Washington today to meet at the White House with President Bush and congressional leaders. It was the culmination of a dizzying day of political one-upmanship that began when Obama placed an early-morning call to McCain in hopes of forging a joint statement of shared principles.
McCain’s decision to up the ante was an audacious gambit to show leadership in a time of crisis. [Emph mine]
So Barack Obama, who had to be strong armed by his President to come and do his day job is said to have decided to go back to DC, and John McCain, actually decided something — to put fixing his country’s financial crises first — at great risk to his campaign, was perusing “an audacious gambit”. Thanks LAT, at least something never changes.
Unless you are totally enthralled with the nuance of indecision, there is no 2nd option on election day.
