Happy July 4th!

All here at Okie Manor, Santa Monica wish you and yours a wonderful, meaningful Independence Day. As you can see, we’ve been flyin’ Old Glory since the early morning sunrise and she’s a watchin’ over some powerful smoker activity.

July 4th is Smokin' at Okie Manor!

Yep, that’s 12-1/2 pounds of USDA Choice brisket hand picked for us by the friendly butchers at our local Bob’s Market. As you can see, I had to kinda section it in two to fit. ;-)

The fire’s holdin’ at 249 degrees, and if I can keep it there in about 6-8 hours we’ll have to exercise some Godzilla-sized self control to keep from destroyin’ it right off the racks — which happened a few years ago — meat comas for everybody.

Declaration of IndependenceBut, this is all good and all, but not what the day represents. As Michael Medved says multiple times each day on his radio show, “we do live in the Greatest Nation on God’s Green Earth!

Yes, we do, and it all started with the men that wrote and signed this — the Declaration of Independence. Seeing and hearing some statements out on the 2008 Presidential campaign trail makes one wonder if the opposition party will ever put up a candidate with the Right Stuff. They sure haven’t this time . . .

If you feel like showing some wounded vets some love and appreciation on this special day, you can donate to the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund. Also, there is the United Warriors Survivors Foundation and Soldiers’ Angels.

The fight for our freedoms may have started in July 4, 1776 — but it will never truly be over, regardless of what the aging 60s narcissists keep telling you. As the masthead over at Mudville Gazette proudly states, “Good people sleep peacefully in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.”

Thanks to all the good men and women of our military — who are constantly preserving our freedoms!
