Will Obama Meet “Unconditionally” With General Petraeus?
In a fund-raising email from the McCain campaign, Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain writes about the quality of Sen. Barack Obama’s decision making skills, or lack thereof:
I have visited Iraq on many occasions because I think the most vital decision that any President of the United States can make has got to be about the security of this nation and the lives of the young Americans who are serving.
But I cannot say the same of one of my opponents, Senator Barack Obama. He has only been to Iraq once, on a trip two years ago. Senator Obama speaks openly about his willingness to sit down with our enemies and engage in open talks, but he hasn’t gone to Iraq in over two years to meet with our leaders and see that progress is being made on the ground. Something is wrong with your judgment when you want to sit down unconditionally with Raul Castro and Iran’s President, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, but you don’t take the opportunity to sit down with General Petraeus and learn about the situation in Iraq firsthand. My friends, this is not the “change” we need in our next president.
Our next president cannot just talk about leadership; they must demonstrate it. Senator Obama is the chairman of an important subcommittee that has oversight of our efforts in Afghanistan. Yet he has not held one hearing on Afghanistan, a place where young Americans are in harm’s way every day. When a chairman of a subcommittee can’t lead, it’s bad; when a president doesn’t lead, it’s unacceptable.
In a sharp political move, McCain has “offered” to accompany Sen. Obama on a trip to Iraq and Afghanistan, to show him what he might have missed over the last two years — which was the last, and only, time Barack has bothered to go and see for himself the conditions in theater. Strange behavior for a Senate sub-committee chairman who desires to be Commander-in-Chief of our armed forces — unless the only command he plans to issue are decommissions.
One of the commentators at American Thinker transcribed Obama’s speech and Rick Moran posted it at Right Wing Nuthouse:
“First, I’m the only major candidate who opposed this war from the beginning. And as president, I will end it.
Second, I will cut tens of billions of dollars in wasteful spending. I will cut investments in unproven missile defense systems. I will not weaponize space. I will slow our development of future combat systems…and I will institute an independent Defense Priorities Board to ensure that the Quadrennial Defense Review is not used to justify unnecessary spending.
Third, I will set a goal of a world without nuclear weapons. To seek that goal I will not develop new nuclear weapons…I will seek a global ban on the development of fissile material…and I will negotiate with Russia to take our ICBMs off of hair-trigger alert…and to achieve deep cuts in our nuclear arsenals.”
No wonder Barack Obama hasn’t been to Iraq and Afghanistan in over two years, and why he hasn’t sat down with our military’s leaders to find out the actual results of “the Surge” — he doesn’t care. And, why should he? As he says, he plans to end the war, start shutting stuff down and gutting programs, he’ll slow development of needed combat systems and let the Chinese and Russians get ahead of us in space. “I will not weaponize space.” Dude! Sputnik weaponized space! Spy satellites weaponize space. We don’t want to have to play catch up all over again. Arrrrrrgh!
Decisions, decisions — Barack sure seems to make a lot o’ them. A bad lot of them!
