The Oklahoman Takes A Stand On Global Warming

Environmental chemist, regular reader, and frequent ‘Okie’ commenter Glenn Speck sent this Oklahoman unsigned editorial to my attention: Unholy writ: Skeptic debunks climate change apologists.

PITY that the writers strike doesn’t extend to the authors of reports on global warming, to news stories about those reports and to the sermons penned by Al Gore, the high priest of climate change. Perhaps a break from writing would give them more time to read.

We suggest they start with “Cool It: The Skeptical Environmentalist’s Guide to Global Warming” by Scandinavian scholar Bjorn Lomborg. “Skeptical” as he may be, Lomborg is no doubter of global warming: “That humanity has caused a substantial rise in atmospheric carbon-dioxide levels over the past centuries, thereby contributing to global warming, is beyond debate.”

The key word in this discussion is “debate.” Let’s have some! Let’s leave the pews of the First Church of Climate Change long enough to sort fact from fiction and the rational from the emotional.

Lomborg gets especially nasty treatment from the Left, as he is their most hated kind — someone that agrees with their premise that the Earth is getting warmer, but doesn’t find anything particularly troubling about that stated fact. Actually, he sees net benefit gains from world-wide warming — not the cataclysms predicted by good ol’ Al Gore. That alone is enough to chap a Lefty’s butt to scab-city stage.

Strategies to mitigate climate change are far costlier than their benefit. Lomborg appeals for solutions with more reliable cost-benefit ratios. While acknowledging that global warming “is real and man-made,” the author says the “strong, ominous and immediate consequences of global warming are often wildly exaggerated” and that we need “simpler, smarter and more efficient” solutions. Finally, he says, “Many other issues are much more important than global warming — hunger, poverty and disease, for example.”

Ah, the Gore choir chants, global warming negatively affects hunger, poverty and disease. Actually, it does and it doesn’t. In some ways, a warmer climate increases crop yield, raising incomes and making it more affordable to treat and prevent diseases.

Lomborg puts climate change in perspective. His book is a breath of fresh, if warmer, air. We urge Gore’s Amen Corner to truly start thinking globally, jettison their intolerance of debate and read this book.

I’ve heard Lomborg on several radio shows, and although I’m not ready to agree with him that warming is man-caused, his arguments for possible benefits is convincing, and his rationale for spending the enormous amounts that the Warming Alarmists want to collect via carbon credits, set-asides and taxes to spend on CO2 reduction instead on direct eradication of disease-causing conditions, clean water sourcing — you know, things that make sense, things that support instead of wrecking the world’s economy. If you’ve got 22 minutes or so to spare, you can watch Lomborg explain all this in his own words in this video.

And then, there’s this one: If You Ever Had Any Doubt About Their True Agenda, wherein SeeDubya shows us that Greenpeace International isn’t really interested in solving “Global Warming”, they just want to cause the demise of modern civilization.

Very open-minded, eh? The London Convention, at least, is simply hedging based on lack of scientific evidence. But for Greenpeace, it’s all about the evils of industry, not about solving the problem.

An honest organization would be receptive to possible work-arounds. But Greenpeace has never been an honest organization.

Remember, it’s not science — it’s a religion!
