Just When You Thought You Had Something Figured Out
Like how useless the French government has been and will be in the future struggle against radical Islam. Oh, wait a minute, that was last decade, last year, last month, last week — What the ????
On Sunday, [French Foreign Minister Bernard] Kouchner used the toughest language to date from a French minister, warning that “we have to prepare for the worst, and the worst is war [with Iran].” If Tehran possessed an atomic weapon, it would be a “real danger for the whole world,” he said in an interview.
Amazing, you’d think that there was a change of the guard over there, a change of heart or something. Let’s see, what possibly could it be . . .
France has taken a more threatening posture towards Iran since the election of President Nicolas Sarkozy in May, and its willingness to promote extra-UN sanctions puts it closely in line with the position of the United States.
Sure, I knew that. (Hmmm, makes one wonder what changes in our fight against the Islamists await us after ‘08 — be careful who you vote for . . . but I digress.) And, I also know that in the realm of International obligations and negotiations such strong statements like Kouchner’s will inevitably get their sharp points rounded off a bit — we’re not talkin’ about a Bush here. Fortunately, we’re not talkin’ about a Clinton clone either. No having to parse what is meant by “we have to prepare for the worst, and the worst is war.” Especially after the recent leak of Germany’s position that it would not be wanting an increase in the sanctions against Iran, but that it would, in secret, support US air strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities — along with a public outcry against same . . . thanks loads guys . . . still, it’s good to see a glimmer of consciousness in the European collective eye.
Initial press reaction to France’s Iran bid was uniformly negative in Europe and France. Yet by Tuesday, Le Monde was saying that France is “in the lead position” in Europe on Iran. Bernard Guetta, a public affairs commentator on FranceInter radio took a sophisticated middle position. Iran as the most powerful nation in the Middle East should give up its nuclear program, he said Tuesday, but Iran is essential to solving this problem and should be given carrots as well as sticks.
What ever could be pushing our cobweb-mined buddies on the other side of the pond? Perhaps it’s the fear that if the Western world won’t stand together and keep Ahmadinejad and the day-glow mullahs from getting their hands on the Big-Botta-Boom that Israel will, out of sheer necessity, do it for us — at a very great cost, perhaps engulfing the entire region in a cataclysmic, world-economy-destroying war.
That’s a risk even the French, and hopefully the rest of Europe, seem not willing to take.
