“Live Earth” Stalls — Augers Itself Into The Ground!
Not that it’s really any surprise, but ol’ Big Al Gore‘s Man-Caused Global-Warming World-Wide Rock Extravaganza — wasn’t much of an extravaganza after all . . . From today’s Hollywood Reporter:
NBC’s three-hour primetime “Live Earth” special, which included highlights from Saturday’s global concerts, failed to generate much enthusiasm in the ratings.
The estimated 2.7 million viewers was slightly under the 3 million viewers NBC has averaged on Saturday nights in the summer with repeats and the Stanley Cup hockey playoffs on what is already the least-popular night of television.
{…}
The three-hour concert special from Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., drew a 0.9 rating/3 share in adults 18-49 — the same as a typical summer Saturday after Memorial Day.
The special was also just under ABC’s primetime coverage of the Live 8 concert, which occurred Independence Day weekend on July 2, 2005. Live 8 averaged 2.9 million viewers and a 1.0 rating/5 share in adults 18-49.
It didn’t play well in the UK either, and many complained about all the foul language that the “peace, love and rock & roll Warmies” feel bolsters the validity of their Global Warming B.S. (bad science). The Daily Mail reports:
Live Earth has been branded a foul-mouthed flop.
Organisers of the global music concert – punctuated by swearing from presenters and performers – had predicted massive viewing figures.
But BBC’s live afternoon television coverage attracted an average British audience of just 900,000.
In the evening, when coverage switched from BBC2 to BBC1, the figure rose to just 2.7 million.
And the peak audience, which came when Madonna sang at Wembley, was a dismal 4.5 million. Three times as many viewers saw the Princess Diana tribute on the same channel six days before.
Two years ago, Live 8 drew a peak television audience of 9.6million while Live Aid notched 10million in 1985.
Seems like “nice weather” and a preference for watching the coverage of tennis at Wimbledon soundly beat out Big Al’s foul-mouthed “doom & gloom” rockers.
The BBC’s coverage, which ran for 15 hours from 12.30pm on Saturday to 4am yesterday, also sparked dozens of complaints about bad language.
The swearing started at 1.30pm when Phil Collins, the first act on in London, used the f-word while singing with his band Genesis.
Razorlight singer Johnny Borrell used the same expletive a few minutes later in one of his songs. And Chris Rock swore while introducing fellow comic Ricky Gervais, who soon followed suit.
The bad language prompted a number of angry postings on BBC messageboards.
As all good ad execs understand oh so well, if your message won’t fly on its own, haul out the skin — so out came Pussycat Dolls Kimberly Wyatt and Nicole Scherzinger. Now, I’ve certainly got nothin’ against a bit o’ skin from time to time, but these gals don’t exactly come across as rocket climate scientists.
And, what about our local kitty-box liner, the LA Times coverage? Well, doing a search for “Live Earth” shows that yesterday they had plenty of pics, but to get to today’s story you have to go to the extended link. There you get Times Staff Writer Ann Powers’ take that only the Internet delivered the goods on this one.
The occasional twinge of guilt about how much globally warming juice was needed to feed all my electronics gave way with each freshly glimpsed performance, or commentary from concerned celebrities including Kevin Bacon and Cameron Diaz, or tips on how to “green” my house by adjusting my thermostat and reupholstering my chairs using old sweaters. With so much to absorb, reflection wasn’t really an option.
Oh my, I must really be a dinosaur — I can imagine reupholstering my chairs with ol’ Bessy, but not with an old cardigan. You gotta luv Warmies — they have “so much to absorb, reflection [is]n’t really an option” for the poor dears. Especially if it involves consideration of real climate data and analysis.
I wish that I was confident the tide is finally turning on this anthropogenic climate change debacle. More money is going to be wasted, and more human suffering is going to be caused than most can imagine if the whole world buys into the lie. Of course, those that actually do wish us harm, and are not only planning but implementing strategies for our ultimate destruction won’t be buying into it — but they will certainly be happy to see us totally distracted while they wait for the proper time to deliver the “death blow”. When you’ve ostriched yourself up the wazzoo in fear over global warming, when you’ve taxed yourself into financial ruin, when you’ve eliminated your ability to manufacture the means of your own defense, and when you’ve curtailed your ability to travel — you’re screwed, really, really screwed.
Our enemies will gladly wait for this . . . maybe they’ll even wear an “Earth First” t-shirt while they saw off your head with a rusty knife.
Remember, your vote does matter.
