And The Council Winners Are:
This was a very difficult week for me in choosing the 1st and 2nd place posts for my Watcher’s Council voting duties, with six out of the twelve fighting for my two votes. I chose in this order, Guess Where Your President Was Wednesday Morning… Insh’allah by Joshuapundit and Condescension As Bigotry by Bookworm Room. Well, at least I picked the number one correctly, per the Council.
Second place was actually a four-way tie among With Snark by Done With Mirrors, This I Believe by The Education Wonks, Condescension As Bigotry by Bookworm Room, (yippe!) and Quote of the Day: Islamophobia Edition by Cheat Seeking Missiles, (way to go, Laer!)
Your humble, but rather snarky-this-week servant got a single 2nd place vote from someone — thanks for that — especially in light of the rather scathing anti-snark post by Done With Mirrors. One can see that your ol’ Okie is smartin’ a bit over that one. I’d like to think instead of just being terminally-snarky, that I try to attain a level of satire, as per the second definition — Irony, sarcasm, or caustic wit used to attack or expose folly, vice, or stupidity. “Folly, vice, or stupidity”, pretty much sums up my opinion of good ol’ Big Al Gore in Live Earth’s Al Gore — A Pompous Piece O’…! I’ll simply have to try harder as unfortunately, like with The Anchoress, oft times snark runs through these veins!
Michael YonOnce again, the non-council winning post was by embedded ex-special forces self-financed combat-reporter Michael Yon with his harrowing tale and pics of an entire village slaughtered by al Qaeda, Bless the Beasts and Children. You don’t want to have eaten recently when you read this one, but you definitely should read it.
A distant number two was Understanding Current Operations in Iraq by the Small Wars Journal — which lays out step-by-step what our current campaign, “The Surge”, is really all about and why it just could work the way it is intended, something that you will NEVER read in a MSM outlet, that’s for sure.
It will be a long, hard summer, with much pain and loss to come, and things could still go either way. But the population-centric approach is the beginning of a process that aims to put the overall campaign onto a sustainable long-term footing. The politics of the matter then can be decisive, provided the Iraqis use the time we have bought for them to reach the essential accommodation. The Embassy and MNF-I continue to work on these issues at the highest levels but fundamentally, this is something that only Iraqis can resolve: our role is to provide an environment in which it becomes possible.
I lucked out and also picked these last two in the correct order. Cool! See a full list of all the posts that received votes this week. By the way, if you would like to have one of your own posts considered in the non-council part of this enterprise, why not take up the Watcher’s offer of link whorage? Lot’s of them weasels out there that sho ‘nuf need some watchin’!
Thanks, Watcher, for an outstanding week of posts!
