Bloggin’ in the USA — Safer Than Bloggin’ In Egypt!
The Egyptian blogger Sandmonkey is buggin’ out, (h/t: Michelle Malkin).
Today is going to be the day that I’ve been dreading for quite sometime now. Today is the day I walk away from this blog. Done. Finished.
There are many reasons, each would take a post to list, and I just do not have the energy to list them. As anyone who has been reading this blog for the past month, I think it is apparent that things are not the same with me. There are reasons for that:
One of the chief reasons is the fact that there has been too much heat around me lately. I no longer believe that my anonymity is kept, especially with State Secuirty agents lurking around my street and asking questions about me since that day. I ignore that, the same way I ignored all the clicking noises that my phones started to exhibit all of a sudden, or the law suit filed by Judge Mourad on my friends, and instead grew bolder and more reckless at a time where everybody else started being more cautious. It took me a while to take note of the fear that has been gripping our little blogsphere and comprehend what it really means. The prospects for improvment, to put it slightly, look pretty grim.
Boy, if a statement like that doesn’t curdle your milk a little bit and make you appreciate the great breadth and depth of freedom-of-speech that we have here in the US, you’re not paying attention, or you are so blinded by your hatred of George Bush that you imagine restrictions and repressions at every turn.
If, as many leftist bloggers constantly write, this administration has taken away more civil liberties than any other in our history, if, folks in opposition are being harassed and disappeared, if, they are so terrified of the ChimpyMcBushHitler storm troopers that they no longer can express their point of view — why are DailyKos, Huffington Post, Wonkette, Talking Points Memo, MoveOn and Media Matters still alive and kickin’, indeed thriving? Uh, maybe they’ll get back to us on that one, but I’ll not hold my breath.
Back to Sandmonkey. If you read the comments to his last post you’ll feel the love for this guy and a great respect for what he has been trying to accomplish. Tough, trying to change the fate of a nation from your keyboard, and in this case, very dangerous, too. Makes you wonder how many of us over here would keep pounding away if we were hearing “clicking noises” on our phones and we saw “State Secuirty agents lurking around” our homes? Of course, over here the clicking phone bit is the computer call trying to sell you carpet cleaning and those guys lurking around are just casing your place to see when would be the best time to steal your big screen plasma. Wish for the Sandmonkey’s sake the same were true, but man — it’s not!
Get out o’ there, Sandmonkey. Surf’s up out here in La La Land. So’s freedom!

I hope Sandmonkey retains his anonymity and his safety. As you said, he took very real risks to tell the truth to the world, while our home-grown liberals risk nothing, but demand respect for being tools.
