Tragedy in Virginia

Yesterday I was at a near total loss of words over the mass killing that took place on the Virginia Tech University campus. It’s still very difficult to address — evil this heinous is hard to look at, impossible to rationalize, near impossible to comprehend — we don’t want to personally accept the possibility that it could happen to us. But, look at this one must, and contemplate not the “why” of it all, but how we would react in such a tragic situation. Would I be as brave as Liviu Librescu, a holocaust survivor who barricaded his classroom doorway, allowing students to escape by jumping out of windows, before the shooter did what the Nazis failed to accomplish and ended Librescu’s life at age 76? And, what of this shooter?

The gunman [23 year-old Cho Seung-Hui] suspected of carrying out the Virginia Tech massacre that left 33 people dead was described Tuesday as a sullen loner whose creative writing in English class was so disturbing that he was referred to the school’s counseling service.

News reports also said that he may have been taking medication for depression, that he was becoming increasingly violent and erratic, and that he left a note in his dorm in which he railed against “rich kids,”"debauchery” and “deceitful charlatans” on campus.
(…)
The Chicago Tribune reported on its Web site that he left a note in his dorm room that included a rambling list of grievances. Citing unidentified sources, the Tribune said he had recently shown troubling signs, including setting a fire in a dorm room and stalking some women.

ABC, citing law enforcement sources, reported that the note, several pages long, explains Cho’s actions and says, “You caused me to do this.”

Investigators believe Cho at some point had been taking medication for depression, the Tribune reported.

Get ready for the swelling tide of sentiment, the second-guessing, the earnest quest to find the “reasons” that a 23 yr-old would slaughter so many of his peers. Some of these “reasons” are in the above ‘graphs, but instead of causes, they are symptoms — symptoms of a sociopath. And no, I’m not meaning medical symptoms, like with a schizophrenic, but someone that has no human conscience. Someone that has disengaged from the human race. Someone that has become a predator on his own kind. That’s not someone that is “sick”, it’s someone that has become the embodiment of the purest evil. At least the bastard is dead, sparing all of us an endless morass of a legal battle to convict and punish him. He’s already met his eternal fate.

For the survivors, much grieving and healing efforts stand between their now and whatever form of normalcy they can create for their future. Starting this process with a service at the university’s basketball arena today, one of the speakers was President Bush who said:

“Laura and I have come to Blacksburg today with hearts full of sorrow,” he said in six-minute remarks at a convocation on the campus where 33 people, including the suspected gunman, died in two separate shootings the day before. “This is a day of mourning for the Virginia Tech community and it is a day of sadness for our entire nation.”

“To all of you who are OK, I’m happy for that,” Bush said. “To those of you who are in pain or who have lost someone close to you, I’m sure you can call on any one of us and have help anytime you need it.”

“People who have never met you are praying for you,” Bush said. “They’re praying for your friends who have fallen and who are injured. There’s a power in these prayers, a real power. In times like this, we can find comfort in the grace and guidance of a loving God.”

“On this terrible day of mourning, it’s hard to imagine a time will come when life at Virginia Tech will return to normal, but such a day will come,” Bush said. “And when it does, you will always remember the friends and teachers who were lost yesterday, and the time you shared with them, and the lives that they hoped to lead.”

Compassionate, our President Bush. Not that the Left will grant him that, but more on that bizarre part of this story via the “Read more” link at the bottom of this post. What the Left is going to do is try to use this tragedy to implement even more gun controls, as if the 200 million some-odd guns in the U.S. are out there killing folks all on their own. What is it about “Guns don’t kill people, people kill people” these folks can’t or won’t understand? Perhaps if some of the teachers or other students had been armed, this killer might have been stopped. I doubt that it is any accident of fate that this type of mass killing seems to happen so often at schools — schools are almost totally gun-free zones. But, that argument is more political than I want to be at the moment.

What we can all do now is pray for the wounded, the families and friends of the dead, and for the survivors that will have this event playing in their minds like an endless loop for many days, weeks, months to come. Coming to terms with such senselessness is never easy. May God be with each and every one of them . . .

Now for some reactions from the Hard Left — Caution! This ain’t at all pretty:

From HuffPo: (h/t: Patterico)

A shooter like that should visit the white House and rid the world of the scums.
It’s Payback Time America….Your kids are being shot just like the innocents in Iraq.

Sad, but I guess my comment wiil be posted here—You all know which thread it was to be posted on-sorry, but I wanted to be heard by people who care……

F”k you all you gun f”kers. I read this site everyday and have read it everyday for the last year and a half. I seldom post, but f”k you. You neo trash ass-holes think this tragedy is just like your arm chair war with Iraq. People are dying horrible deaths in addition to being sentenced to horrible futures and all you can say is OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWWW if I had my state or federal government sanctioned Uzi I would kill that gun toting mass murderer, well it just does not happen that way. Guns kill and people kill. All the facts are not out yet, but one fact is inarguable-A gun killed the future here in the U.S. just like is has killed the future of both the Iraqis and the future of many U.S. soldiers. To reprise-F”k you all you gun f”kers-to be banned would be a privilege.

“The National Rifle Association joins the entire country in expressing our deepest condolences to the families of Virginia Tech University and everyone else affected by this horrible tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families,” spokesman Andrew Arulanandam said in a written statement, declining further comment.

Well, the NRA says ’shit happens’, and they’re praying that Jesus, his dad, aka ‘G_d’ and the one known only as ‘holy’ ghost will let the souls of the kids and teachers into heaven, so I guess the NRA has been able to pretty quickly put together a thirty-five word platitude to assure themselves that they have washed the blood of this ‘largest ever’ massacre from their hands.

Platitude: (def.) A platitude is a trite, meaningless, or prosaic statement that is presented as if it were significant and original.

That’s all I can stomach — there are some rational comments, but there’s 48 pages of this sickening trash at the moment to go through and I won’t do that!
