Seems like the tactics being used by the insurgents in Iraq are changing once again. Now it’s not good enough to “maybe” kill some Iraqi children in a suicide bomb blast, they intend to get the job done right by using children as a ruse to get the bomb past security forces and blow them up real good. From an LA Times synopsis:

Iraqi insurgents used children to get past a Baghdad checkpoint and then blew up their vehicle with the two youngsters still in the back seat, the U.S. military said Tuesday.

The weekend attack killed the children and three bystanders, Army Maj. Gen. Michael Barbero, with the Pentagon’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, said at a briefing.

“Children in the back seat lower suspicion. We let it move through,” Barbero said. “They parked the vehicle. The adults run out and detonate it with the children in the back. So the brutality and ruthless nature of this enemy hasn’t changed. I mean, they are just interested in slaughtering Iraqi civilians to meet their ends.”

Hope you caught that last part — “[t]he adults run out” — geez, what part of suicide bombers did these guys not get? They’re more than willing to be homicide bombers, and kid-killers, but I guess they weren’t quite ready for their own personal 72 virgins. They had parked next to a market that was across the street from a school, so it sure looks like they were intent upon killing a lot more than just two kids!

Attacks on Iraqi civilians are down by a third and sectarian murders have fallen by 50 percent since mid-February when US and Iraqi forces began moving into Baghdad as part of a new security crackdown, the general said.

Wasn’t it Sun Tzu that said?

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not your enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

Those killing the innocent in Iraq are ruthless, heartless, amoral SOBs that just plain ol’ need killing. It doesn’t get much simpler than that.
