Scaring the TEDs, Brits On Fire, Gore Rocks — Must Be Global Warming!

Geeemany! I’m gettin’ so sick of writing about the Global Warming hyper-hysteria, but today it’s just so in your face that — I have to. Take this item for instance. At the TED (Technology, Entertainment & Design) Conference just wrapping up in Monterey, CA (natch) one of the highlight speakers, venture capitalist John Doerr, had some forward-looking, uplifting, high-minded words for his audience in regards to the threat of Global Warming. Per Business Week:

“I’m scared,” he told the audience, looking down at his 15-year-old daughter in the front row. “I don’t think we’re going to make it.”

Must be fun over at his house. Bet the kid’s on Paxil or something to be able to cope with all the doom & gloom that dad spews forth all day. Speaking of:

Doerr issued a passionate call to action for everyone to make environmental concerns their “next big thing.” (…)

“Going green is the largest economic opportunity of the 21st century,” said Doerr, who through his venture firm’s Greentech initiative is investing in the sector. Although much attention has been focused on fighting global warming, Doerr offered a bleak assessment of these efforts. “I’m afraid it’s not enough,” he said.

Wait a minute . . . I’m sensing a pattern here: venture capitalist — “largest economic opportunity of the 21st century” — scaring the livin’ willies out everyone over Global Warming . . . hey, that adds up to BIG BUSINESS IN “GOIN’ GREEN”!

It’s the money, stupid!

Isn’t it always? But, the level of shrill rhetoric over the “GW threat” is starting to grate on the nerves of many scientists and even some on the Left. Check this out from the New York Times:

Hollywood has a thing for Al Gore and his three-alarm film on global warming, “An Inconvenient Truth,” which won an Academy Award for best documentary. So do many environmentalists, who praise him as a visionary, and many scientists, who laud him for raising public awareness of climate change.

But part of his scientific audience is uneasy. In talks, articles and blog entries that have appeared since his film and accompanying book came out last year, these scientists argue that some of Mr. Gore’s central points are exaggerated and erroneous. They are alarmed, some say, at what they call his alarmism.

On the other side of the pond the Brits are having to placate their “Green Party” and Tony Blair is promising that the UK will lead the world in reducing emissions that “cause” Global Warming. Wow, that ought to help keep the UK economy ginnin’ along. We can start a pool on when they come over here with their hand out.

And, what about our newly installed Democrat Congress — what do they spend their time on when they aren’t trying to raise our taxes or pull our troops out of the War On Terror? Why, gettin’ ol’ Big-Al Gore permission to hold one of his Live Earth rock concerts at the Capital this summer.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) have introduced a resolution to use the Capitol grounds as a site for the huge, multi-venue global-warming concert on July 7.

Brother! At least the first sentence of this article gave me a little chuckle.

A North Pole expedition meant to bring attention to global warming was called off after one of the explorers got frostbite.

Heh, gotta love it! Now, let’s find something else to write about. Ol’ Mahmoud’s lookin’ lonely up there at the top-right . . . (db)
