Who Can Depolarize the Next Presidential Election?

Who among the current declared or most likely to declare for the ‘08 Presidential election would be a force that could depolarize the electorate? That’s the discussion going on this AM over at Article 6 Blog by fellow SCBA bloggers John Schroeder and Lowell Brown.

John and I are interested in the subject of polarization, something that seems to characterize American politics these days. Is that going to change anytime soon? Will religion– especially Mitt Romney’s religion– have any role in making the problem better or worse?

I’m not trying to paint a gloomy picture, but simply to be realistic. The left either hates or fears any religious tradition that requires high standards of personal behavior and sacrifice from its adherents. If Romney’s candidacy proceeds successfully, I think we may see a level of nastiness in the general election that we have not seen in over a century.

What will be fascinating to watch is how the American people will react to that battle.

Check it out . . . interesting stuff! (db)
