Israel On The Hook — Once Again

Israel may ‘go it alone’ against Iran

Israel is carefully watching the world’s reaction to Iran’s continued refusal to suspend uranium enrichment, with some high-level officials arguing it is now clear that when it comes to stopping Iran, Israel “may have to go it alone,” The Jerusalem Post has learned.

One senior source said on Tuesday that Iran “flipped the world the bird” by not responding positively to the Western incentive plan to stop uranium enrichment. He expressed frustration that the Russians and Chinese were already saying that Iran’s offer of a “new formula” and willingness to enter “serious negotiations” was an opening to keep on talking.

“The Iranians know the world will do nothing,” he said. “This is similar to the world’s attempts to appease Hitler in the 1930s – they are trying to feed the beast.”

He said there was a need to understand that “when push comes to shove,” Israel would have to be prepared to “slow down” the Iranian nuclear threat by itself.

So, here we go again — letting Israel do the world’s dirty work, like they did in taking out Saddam’s nuclear capabilities. Except this time, the flights would be very long, over much hostile territory — a lot of Israeli pilots might be facing one-way trips! Much sacrifice for such a small country to make, but Israel is seeking survival, and if Iran is allowed to develop nukes, Israel’s survival would definitely be in question. The JP article ends with this:

The world powers, the five permanent UN Security Council members plus Germany, have given Iran until August 31 to accept the incentives package.

Like what are WE (the permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany) gonna do, take our footballs and go home? Ol’ Mahmoud and the Mullas are laughing their butts off on this one. “Nah, nah — the West, it trips on its johnson once again and will do NOTHING against us!”

So, are WE (the good ol’ US of A) gonna help? Well — dunno ’bout that. According to a piece in the New York Times this AM — not that I’m much of a lover of NYT reporting — some in the Bush administration think the CIA is hedging its bets about intelligence reports on the Iranian threat. Burned by their miserable performance in the leadup to the Iraq War — their BDS (Bush Derangement Syndrome) overcame a lot of them, boy howdy did it ever! — and now they would rather downplay the meaning of their data than make another big mistake.

The consensus of the intelligence agencies is that Iran is still years away from building a nuclear weapon. Such an assessment angers some in Washington, who say that it ignores the prospect that Iran could be aided by current nuclear powers like North Korea. “When the intelligence community says Iran is 5 to 10 years away from a nuclear weapon, I ask: ‘If North Korea were to ship them a nuke tomorrow, how close would they be then?” said Newt Gingrich, the former Republican speaker of the House of Representatives.

“The intelligence community is dedicated to predicting the least dangerous world possible,” he said.

Considering how many planes have been turned around or forced to make unscheduled landings this last week, and the broken up UK based airline plot, and Israel being attacked by Hezbollah last month — I don’t think that we will ever live in “the least dangerous world possible”. I think that the reality is that we are living in one of the MOST dangerous worlds that are possible — and Iran with nuclear weapons would make that an even greater threat to US and the rest of the West.

A nuclear Iran cannot be allowed to happen! Israel knows, we know it, too.

Now — who’s gonna step up and put a stop to it? There’s the money question for ya! (db)
