Israel / Hezbollah — & the Whims of History
“The quest stands upon the edge of a knife. Stray but a little and it will fail to the ruin of all.” – Galadriel
I thought of this passage from LOTR when I read Dean Barnett’s post on Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert,
To think that Olmert now sits in the chair occupied by Ariel Sharon mere months ago is to experience nausea of the highest order.
How precarious the twists and turns of history. How dark and dangerous our present if we as electorate, and they as leaders — choose poorly. How devastating and hopeless our future if we, the greatest, most good, nation on the face of the earth does not stand up to evil in our time.
In the grand game of International poker, our side has blinked — and Israel is about to pay the price. Olmert is agreeing to the cease fire and after this one last weekend-push deeper into Lebanon, the major part of the fighting will stop — for now.
Yoni the blogger posts an email from an IDF officer who was readying his men for that one last push:
I am afraid for my guys, the fighting has been tough but now that the UN is going to set a cease fire and Olmert what a SOB he is again stabbing Tzhal in the back again.
We are going to go back to Lebanon before the world sh—ts on the Jews once again.
Yoni how can I take my troops back to fight in such a mess, what is I loose one of my guys ?What words can I use to comfort their families. I have some guys that have wives at home pregnant what if G-d forbid their dad is killed today, for what? I feel like sitting and crying but I got to lead my men.
We have lost the war and the army has the ability to beat Hizballah, Syria and the Palestinians all at the same time, but the cowards will not let us.
He’ll have some fighting to do, as Nasrallah has also accepted the cease fire, but will continue to fight until the International Force is in place. Haaretz writes about the UN cease fire plan:
The United Nations Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution Friday seeking a “full cessation” of violence between Israel and Hezbollah.
The resolution, adopted unanimously, authorizes 15,000 UN peacekeepers to help Lebanese troops take control of south Lebanon as Israel Defense Forces troops that have occupied the area withdraw. It also calls for the demilitarization of the area between the Israel-Lebanon border and the Litani River.
Good luck getting anything constructive done with UN peacekeepers, like they’ve been so very effective for the last six years where they’ve been assigned in the Hezbollah controlled southern Lebanon to keep the Hezbollah under wraps.
Somehow, I think that the world has slipped off the edge of this particular knife — we’ll just have to wait to see who got sliced the deepest, and if it’s a mortal wound. (db)
