Hewitt Gets It Right — Seattle Gunman A Terrorist

From the Seattle Times:Hugh Hewitt many times more often than not lays out the major points on the Global War On Terror (GWOT) in a straight-forward, take-no-prisoners manner that leaves left-of-center and the MSM in particular looking pathetically uninformed, if not downright silly — or maybe even dangerously ignorant and biased. Today, for whatever reason — plenty of time in a Denver hotel, or on the flight home — he adds an eloquence to his writing that makes it even more powerful. Here are excerpts from his post on the MSM writing off the lone Seattle gunman from yesterday’s attack at the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle as the act of a single, mentally-disturbed individual — shown at right in his ‘94 yearbook photo.
There is a continuum in the media’s coverage of terrorist incidents that runs from John Hinkley through Sirhan Sirhan and Oswald to McVeigh and the 19 of 9/11. Each was a political act, though in Hinkley’s case there wasn’t a “political” motive. But the “mental state” of a terrorist doesn’t help the public sort through the implications of a terrorist act.(…)
Cold-blooded killers working in a highly organized network are much more of a threat than voice-hearing lone whackos. But as yesterday proved, the latter can savage a small group and through them a community and a country. It isn’t enough for the vaunted MSM to declare “lone whacko” and move back to the churlishness of the Israelis.
We need to find out a great deal about Haj. Quickly.
For the Progressive Left, “a history of mental illness”, excuses a myriad of sins, absolves someone of responsibility for their actions, removes that individual from any participation in outside events. As a crazy person, you can’t be a part of anything else, therefore there is no reason to investigate further, now is there?
Ask the Klan. They knew how to utilize irrational hatred, how to mobilize those among them that were crazy-as-a-shit-house-rat to “go off”, burning — pillaging — lynching. Didn’t make those that got lynched any less dead! Of course, since the victims of that despicable slaughter were blacks, the Left certainly rose up in mass to condemn and stamp out the Klan — which they most certainly should have. But what about this latest hate killer? Ah, he was crazy and he just killed a Jew. Nothin’ to see here, move along. I don’t know about you, but to me — that ain’t right! Hugh continues:
Can we agree that all terrorists have some degree of mental illness? Can we also agree that it is completely and utterly irrelevant to the victims of their crimes?
What we need to know –and what the American MSM seems profoundly uninteretsed in– is where did they come from? What made them terrorists?
Amen to that!
A very interesting few weeks lay ahead for the American media. It is hard to be an optimist about how it will perform. American Muslims will rightly be concerned about unfair categorizations and generalizations, and the best way to avoid such results is to fully engage the Muslim community in any reporting and analysis.
But the fear of giving offense should not stop the MSM from asking all the hard questions, beginning with “Who is Naveed Afzal Haq and how did he come to become a terrorist?” The same questions, please, for the other 24.
I’m not holding my breath on this one — I like to breath, breathing is good. We’ll see what the Sunday editions of the major papers bring with them. Hopefully we’ll know more, hopefully they will rise to this challenge and take the responsibility to “inform” the public. Shoot, maybe pigs will be doing barrel rolls, too. (db)
