Jonathan Chait Gets One Right

Jonathan Chait surprised me with his column in this Sunday’s op-ed piece for Current, the LA Times’ opinion section. What is revealing of the paper’s attitude toward all things Bush and Israeli is the online page for “opinion”. Instead of Chait’s most recent column, , they are highlighting a piece from July 16 called Is Bush Still Too Dumb to Be President? Guess the truths in today’s column, Who Says War Has to Be Proportional? (some silly editors headline, not Chait’s), don’t rate with the online editorial staff. You have to click around to the print edition to find a link to today’s column.

Chait does a pretty good job rejecting the position that Israel is using disproportionate force in its fight against Hezbollah in Lebanon. When I first started reading, I was prepared to get irritated as I usually do with a Chait column, but by the end I hadn’t found anything but some well-reasoned examinations. I’m not alone in being surprised, so was Hugh Hewitt, but he did find a small nit to pick.

Read the whole piece. My only quibble is that since Chait asserts there is doubt that Israel’s offensive is “working,” he ought to have given us his measure of success for future reference. The destruction of a significant number of missiles/rockets is a[n] undeniable success f[ro]m Israel’s standpoint, though perhaps not a strategic one.

Makes me wonder how much abuse ol’ Jonathan is gonna have to endure this week back at the LA Times’ ranch! (db)
