Who Didn’t Give What to the NSA?

Even yours truly got all hot and bothered over the MSM relayed story about three of the large telephone companies turning over their databases of calls made since 9/11, although I was all for it! The Left has gone totally apoplectic over this one — a fine example of an old Lefty just refusing to get it is this Helen Thomas/Tony Snow exchange over at Hot Air.
But, what if none of it ever happened? The White House will neither confirm or deny that phone number records are being analyzed for evidence of Al Qaeda calling patterns. Now, two of the companies outed by leaks from anonymous sources are denying that they have ever been part of this NSA program. Today, from the UPI:
New York-based Verizon Communications Inc. Tuesday denied it provided the National Security Agency with data from its customers’ domestic telephone calls.
But the telecommunications company said it “will not confirm or deny whether it has any relationship” to the NSA program.
“That said, media reports made claims about Verizon that are simply false,” the company said. “One of the most glaring and repeated falsehoods in the media reporting is the assertion that, in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, Verizon was approached by NSA and entered into an arrangement to provide the NSA with data from its customers’ domestic calls. This is false.”

Earlier this week, Atlanta-based BellSouth said it did not provide its customer telephone records to the NSA.
Think USA Today will acknowledge the egg-on-its-face over this one? Me neither. Smear, smear, deny, move-on and smear some more. Keep movin’, keep dodgin’ the truth — it’s all in the footwork, right? Yeah — that’s the ticket. And remember — it’s all Bush’s fault — can’t forget that now, can we?
