Pianka Supporters — You can run . . .

. . . but good ol’ Blogger won’t let you hide!

[Welcome Patterico visitors!]

Others are following up on the good professor, Eric R. Pianka, and the efforts of those in the scientific community to discredit Citizen Scientist’s Forrest Mims, whose report on the Pianka speech to the Texas Academy of Science enraged most anyone with a conscience. In case you’re not up to speed on this nightmare, Pianka was waxing eloquently over the joys of seeing 90% of humanity die an agonizing death caused by the Ebola virus — in order to save Earth from Mankind. If that’s not bad enough, his Academy audience gave him a standing ovation, plus an award! Lovely!

I’m not going to rehash this all over again, my thoughts on Pianka can be found here, here and here. The purpose of this post is to preserve the words of someone that was present at a Pianka speech, heard and reported about it, and agrees with the guy. That would be one Brenna McConnell, who has since taken down her blogger blog called “Serenity”. I did some screen capture of the Google Cache version, which for now is still live. I could be accused of overstepping here, because I was taken to task by David, a McConnell friend, in a comment to my first post.

Ah, yes. Once again we have a hero for the people blog. Someone with enough time on his hands, access to the Internet and access to a dictionary to write a blog about all of the dangers facing God and Country. Though I’m certain it’s not the first time, you’ve overstepped your bounds here sir. You don’t know Brenna. You don’t know who she is or what she thinks beyond a very cursory glance at her blog. (…)

No, it would certainly not be the first time I’ve overstepped my bounds on this blog. Hey! I like to overstep — shows I’m actually trying. Where David is wrong, is in accusing me of overstepping on my analysis of Brenna’s post. Where David is correct is that I don’t know Brenna — except what is revealed about her through what she wrote on Serenity. And I didn’t want anyone in the future to think that I had made up something like this little ditty from Brenna:

. . . He’s a radical thinker, that one! I mean, he’s basically advocating for the death of all but 10% of the current population! And at the risk of sounding just as radical, I think he’s right.

I just didn’t feel like letting that quote disappear into the netherworld of forgotten websites. If you would like to view her entire post and read the comments, a full screen capture can be found here. (Warning — Big image file!)

It’s unfortunate that Google took its snapshot of Serenity before this next comment was posted, but I preserved it on the day I first read it.

Reading this drivel from Pianka and “Brenna”, I’ve lost ten minutes of my life I can never get back.

But I guess if Dr. and Mrs. Death here had anything to do with it, I wouldn’t have any life to lose. I’d probably be in that 90% of the population that would be wiped out.

Fortunately for the remaining 10% (and what a gregarious bunch THAT would be), they’d have all the lizards and buffalo they wanted.

Brenna, I certainly hope you’re not planning on marrying and having children. Wouldn’t do much for the cause, would it? And when your grandparents die, try telling your parents that the world is “better off with them dead.” See how that goes over.

Joshua Taj Bozeman at The Blue Site has the goods on Mims’ attackers, rabid Pianka supporters and much, much more, including info that support Mims report. I’m not going to do any more follow ups in that area, but I will certainly keep my eyes and mind open to what Joshua finds out! (db)

From a resource that is keeping current on this, The Blue Site blog:

Here is part of his [Dr. Kenneth R. Summy, from the University of Texas Biology Department] letters to the Texas Academy where he cc’s the letter to Perez:

<ul>"Forrest Mims did not misrepresent anything regarding the contents of the keynote address, and should be commended for openly expressing his concerns - many of us out here feel exactly the same way." </ul>

You can add this to the list of evidence that supports Mims’ account, including Brenna McConnell’s webpage (she was at the speech too) that stated the same conclusion as Mims (she actually SUPPORTS the idea.) You can add the comments of Rebecca Calisi who was also at the speech who came away with the same conclusion. You can add the two student evaluations that say the same thing as well. The evidence was there all along, yet the attackers came out of the woodwork to try to destroy Mims. It’s sickening…but this is often the state of science in 2006- lots of politics and personal attacks.

If it had been only one, Brenna McConnell, with what she wrote in her blog, the review of Pianka would have been suspect. Considering the initial report from Forest Mimms, Brenna's eyewitness account and her agreement with Pinaka's conclusions, Rebecca Calisi, the student evaluations mentioned above and Dr. Summy's statement (a prof. from Pianka's own dept. at the U. of T.) -- To me, the question that is begged is:

Why do 200 of Texas's scientists support someone as far out there as Eric R. Pianka? -- What is wrong with you?

My ax is that there are far too many college and university professors of the ilk of Pianka and Ward Churchill, far too many with Liberal philosophys that they insist on cramming down their students' throats, far too many secular humanists that believe that freedom of speech should go only one way.

Wish my ax was a lot sharper!

So, we have about 200 eyewitnesses who say Pianka didn't get close to "advocating" death for anyone, but instead warned against the dangers of mindless overpopulation -- in essence, warned to save the lives of people -- and you have one eyewitness who says they're all crazy.

And you expect us to go with the one?

What sort of axe do you have to grind, anyway?
