Is Islam Itself the Problem?

The more I read in the blogs, the more I see on the news channels and the more talk-radio I listen to, the question keeps coming up — Is our problem with radical Islam, or is it with Islam itself. Our government is telling us that it is the former — a few of my readers/comment-writers the latter. From a historical context, you really must consider the possibility that my readers are correct. Peter Epps, from Comment Me No Comment seems to agree and puts it like this:

First, in a very real sense Islam is the problem. (…) Even in a more generic sense, though, Islam is a bad cultural bet as a religion. The only way forward is through Islam’s failure to enforce what is writings clearly call for–the conquest or absorption of other cultures under an oppressive regime of theocratic law. (…)

Second, though, even if we assume that “real” Islam is the kind that doesn’t teach what its history and texts say it does, (…) it remains that there is no dominant voice of such “moderate Islam” wielding the political or military power to keep the rogue states, terrorists, mullahcracies, and streets in line. Looking for Islam that moves millions? You’ll find Wahhabi clerics funded by Saudi oil money, or their political/religious allies throughout the Middle East. Looking for moderate Islam? You’ll find a few scholars (often disingenuous) and imams, who might sway a neighborhood but whose main audience is–the Western press, (…) and it hasn’t got the power to define the terms its way.

Lots to read and consider within those ellipses, so go check him out. Seems like the West looking for moderate Islam is very much Diane Keaton’s character looking for Mr. Right — she found Mr. Goodbar & we got Osama, Zarqawi, Zawahiri and the boys. (db)
