New OK Law Bans Protest At Funerals

There’s a hate group out of Kansas (Westboro Baptist Church) that makes it a point to protest against the military at the funerals of our fallen soldiers. Partly in response to this group’s past actions, the Oklahoma legislature passed the Funeral Picketing Act, which “makes it a misdemeanor to picket within 500 feet of a church, cemetery or mortuary an hour before and an hour after a funeral.” More from today’s The Oklahoman.
At Spc. Joshua Pearce’s funeral in Guymon on Tuesday, hundreds of highway patrol troopers, sheriff’s deputies and police officers came to enforce [Oklahoma's new] law.
Tricky thing, interfering with protests — everyone’s worried about trampling all over someone’s Constitutional rights. One thing’s for sure, this law will get its day in court. At least it doesn’t interfere with those that counter-protest the insensitive Westboro activists.
Meyer said “invited guests,” such as bikers who have countered past protests with the noise of their motorcycles, would be allowed to demonstrate within the 500 foot boundary if invited by family members attending the funeral.
It’s a cryin’ shame that we have to legislate decent behavior at the funerals of our fallen brave men and women — those that have given the ultimate sacrifice in the service of their country deserve our heartfelt gratitude and utmost reverence — no matter what one thinks about the war in which they have died.
