Michelle Malkin has updates on last Friday’s incident at NCU-Chappel Hill where a recent university graduate took a rented Jeep Grand Cherokee and ran down nine victims on campus, sending six of them to the hospital with non-critical injuries. All six have since been released. Be sure and read Michelle’s quotes from an NCU alumni “who knew Taheri-Azar”.
Today was the Azar’s first day in court, and now we know a bit more about him, and his motives. From Raleigh/Durham’s WRAL:
Mohammed Taheri-azar, a 2005 UNC-Chapel Hill graduate, smiled and waved before his hearing Monday. Taheri-azar told the courtroom that he was “thankful for the opportunity to spread the will of Allah.”
As he left court, Taheri-azar told reporters, “the truth is my lawyer.” When asked if he was trying to kill people, he said yes.
But, why?
[In a 911 call to police] “You can come arrest me,” Taheri-azar said.
He also tells the operator that he thinks he may have hit 15 people and that his reason for doing so was to “punish the government of the United States for [its] actions around the world.” He goes on to say that more of why he did it was in a letter on his bed inside his apartment.
But, is he part of a terrorist cell?
Investigators believe Taheri-azar acted alone and they don’t know of any groups in which he associates. Search warrants showing what investigators found inside his apartment have not yet been released.
Wonder if that stuff will fall into the same black hole that Joel Hinrichs’ investigation fell into? (db)
