Sale of U.S. Ports to UAE Firm — Why?

That seems to be question being asked everywhere, except for maybe the White House. The Bush administration apparently feels it has its own ducks in a row on this — but maybe they better think again. As FoxNews reports:

House GOP Leaders Line Up Against UAE Port Deal

WASHINGTON — House Speaker Dennis Hastert and newly-minted House Majority Leader John Boehner will soon be “flexing muscle” against the Bush administration-approved transaction that permits shifting control of port operations in six U.S. ports from a British company to a company owned by the United Arab Emirates.

“We are very concerned about it and that it could threaten our national security,” one senior House Republican leadership aide told FOX News late Monday. Another senior aide said: “Most indications point to leadership flexing muscle against this transaction.”

This whole deal just doesn’t pass the skin crawl test. Even if the UAE is one of our strongest allies now in the GWOT, having one of its companies taking control of a half-dozen of our largest ports would make this the opportunity of a lifetime for terrorists determined to infiltrate into its organizations. Michell Malkin has a disturbing post up called HOW THE PORT SELLOUT WAS FINANCED that details how this deal would be funded, and which organizations — inside and outside — the UAE would benefit. Then in response, she closes with:

Dubai media outlets are calling critics and skeptics of the port sellout “Islamophobes.”
If demanding that our government put American security interests above foreign business interests makes me an “Islamophobe,” and if wanting to know the full details of the who, what, when, where, and why of this UAE government deal, secretly approved by the Treasury Dept.-led Committee on Foreign Investments in the US, makes me an “Islamophobe,” I plead guilty.

Afraid that I’ve gotta second that emotion — this whole deal is a very bad idea that should stop immediately. (db)
