Prayers for the Assassin

Hugh Hewitt talked about Robert Ferrigno’s novel Prayers for the Assassin on his show today, Hugh said it was on his weekend reading list.

Since tomorrow is my birthday, (Call me James!), I think I’ll take my Christmas gift Barnes & Noble card and go get it. Sounds like just my kind of read. The following are segments from Ferrigno’s comments on the book’s website.

The premise of Prayers for the Assassin is that the USA loses the war on terror and becomes an Islamic republic. I make it clear that the USA was never defeated militarily, but bled white by a conflict without end, weakened internally by dissent, economic malaise, and a consumer culture hostile to people’s thirst for meaning in their lives. A lot of people have asked me if I think such a thing could really happen. (…)

The answer to that question is in his next graph — go and read it.

We live in an innovative, sectarian nation, which values personal freedom and creativity, but it also leaves us shortsighted and vulnerable, demanding quick fixes and steady progress. In a generation-long war, technology will not matter as much as the absolute belief in the rightness of one’s cause and the willingness to die for those beliefs.

Which society do you think is raising and training the most committed, most willing to risk all for the win?

I sometimes think that people who can’t imagine American’s converting to Islam are deaf to the serenity and comfort of a deep religious faith.

Our parents and grandparents, by and large, had this understanding. The 60’s generation tried to deny it — destroy it, and their children don’t even know what this is. Not all, mind you, but far too many. Just look at what is on TV, the movies and in video/computer games. No evidence of any “deep religious faith[s]” there.

My intention was always to tell a tale, to write a novel filled with love and violence and betrayal, a thriller set in the future that makes you forget it’s not happening right now.

Won’t be hard to do, with the Muslim Cartoon War happening world wide, Ahmadinejad rattling the sabers, and the Russians in armed conflict with their own Islamic terrorists.

Like I said, Prayers for the Assassin looks like my kind of read . . . (db)
