Most Americans Approve of NSA Surveillance
[h/t: Michelle Malkin]
Looks like the majority of us in the U.S. agree that President Bush has the authority to intercept communications between Al Queda operatives and U.S. citizens, and is correct to use it. Rassmussen Reports breaks it down like this:
December 28, 2005–Sixty-four percent (64%) of Americans believe the National Security Agency (NSA) should be allowed to intercept telephone conversations between terrorism suspects in other countries and people living in the United States. A Rasmussen Reports survey found that just 23% disagree.
Sixty-eight percent (68%) of Americans say they are following the NSA story somewhat or very closely.
Just 26% believe President Bush is the first to authorize a program like the one currently in the news. Forty-eight percent (48%) say he is not while 26% are not sure.
Eighty-one percent (81%) of Republicans believe the NSA should be allowed to listen in on conversations between terror suspects and people living in the United States. That view is shared by 51% of Democrats and 57% of those not affiliated with either major political party.

I just knew that those of us that approve of this type of surveillance couldn’t be in the minority, the stakes to our national security are just too damn high. What all the nutters that have gotten their panties in a wad over Bush’s impeachable offenses, as they are want to call them, don’t seem to understand, is that the 4th Amendment of the Constitution prohibits “unreasonable” searches and seizures, not ALL searches. Duh!
Those on the Left who are super-critical of our nation’s tactics in the GWOT, especially regarding the Patriot Act, are quick to quote Ben Franklin, “Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.” What they seem to either be unable, or unwilling, to understand, is that with today’s technology, especially with the Internet, communication is an essential tactic of modern warfare. “Net war” is real, and our enemies are becoming good at it. Multiple layers of subterfuge, faked identities, websites that change IP addresses daily, or even more often, encrypted emails and phone conversations, all require a phalanx of the most modern defenses and intercepts to keep those intent upon killing us all from realizing even the most mundane of their intentions. The loss of being able to hide your unsavory reading habits at the local library, one of the essential freedoms that the Left is aghast at losing, is nothing to give up — while keeping another 9/11 attack, or one much worse, from happening is not purchasing “a little temporary safety”, it’s saving thousands, or many multiples thereof, of innocent American lives.
It all gets back to the most basic of misunderstandings by the modern Left. The Islamofascists really do want to eliminate Western society. They aren’t at all interested in multiculteralism, they don’t want a seat at the table, don’t want to compete against us in the political and economic world, don’t want to join the WTO, and don’t want to allow any freedom of, or freedom from for that matter, religion. They are intent upon conquering the entire civilization of man, subjecting all to the ancient tenants of the Sharia, or Islamic law. They want to take the entire world back to the 7th Century! Nothing less will satisfy them. Until Islam is reformed by moderate Muslims, we have no choice but to protect ourselves from those that would kill us without thought or mercy by all the means at our disposal.
Anyone in the U.S. that is being contacted by Al Queda, or any other terror organizations, should be held suspect, monitored carefully, and dealt with harshly if found out to be helping our enemies. Those leaking top secret information about our nation’s security systems should be arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. The press that prints leaked top secret information should be forced to reveal its sources — and those that refuse should spend some quality time as the guest of our correctional institutions. If they believe so strongly that getting the President is worth endangering all the rest of us, then they should be ready to pay the price of their actions. Civil disobedience has no meaning if there are no repercussions.
Welcome to the cell block boys, Bubba is just dyin’ to meet ya! (db)
