OK — There I go again, half-cocked on a news item before checking it out a bit! Looks like this is pretty old news, see here. So the question being begged now is: Why is ABC News making such a big deal of this at this particular time? Stay tuned — more when there’s more.

Don’t ever ask, “What next?” ABC News is reporting that a spy has been arrested who had recently been a marine stationed at the White House.

Officials tell ABC News the alleged spy worked undetected at the White House for almost three years. Leandro Aragoncillo, 46, was a U.S. Marine most recently assigned to the staff of Vice President Dick Cheney.

“I don’t know of a case where the vetting broke down before and resulted in a spy being in the White House,” said Richard Clarke, a former White House advisor who is now an ABC News consultant.

Federal investigators say Aragoncillo, a naturalized citizen from the Philippines, used his top secret clearance to steal classified intelligence documents from White House computers.

In 2000, Aragoncillo worked on the staff of then-Vice President Al Gore. When interviewed by Philippine television, he remarked how valued Philippine employees were at the White House.

“I think what they like most is our integrity and loyalty,” Aragoncillo said.

“[I]ntegrity and loyalty” — Oh, you betcha! Aragoncillo has also admitted to spying while working in Vice President Cheney’s office. He has been accused of downloading more than 100 classified documents from FBI computers.

Where do you think these documents finally ended up? It’s not very realistic to think that the Phillipines was their final destination. I think that China would be a likely receiver, how about you? (db)

Besides China, Al Queda would be the other most likely suspect. The Phillipines have a hugh militant muslim population, with many links to Al Queda, and which has been at war with Western Civilization for many years.
