Meanwhile, Back at the Ranch — Islamic Terrorism Okiestyle?
The 84,000 people at last Saturday’s OU game should say a prayer of thanks that they got out of there alive, ’cause FBI or no FBI, it looks like that was not what was intended for them.
Hinrichs Tried To Buy Ammonium Nitrate
The general manager of a Norman feed store said Tuesday that Joel Henry Hinrichs III had inquired about purchasing a significant amount of ammonium nitrate, the primary ingredient used in the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing.
Dustin Ellison, the general manager of Ellison Feed & Seed on Porter Avenue, said that a man matching Hinrichs’ description had come into the store days before he blew himself up on OU’s campus. Ellison said the man asked about ammonium nitrate, but couldn’t offer a reason why he needed it.
** Evidence is mounting that Joel Henry Hinrichs III, the University of Oklahoma student who blew himself up 100 yards outside the Oklahoma-Kansas State Football Game on Saturday night, had bigger plans. Joel tried to purchase ammonium nitrate at a feed store late last week. Joel attended the Islamic mosque near his apartment, possibly the same mosque as Zacarias Moussaoui attended. His Pakistani roommate has not been seen by neighbors since the incident. The very volatile explosive Joel used is the same chemical that Shoe Bomber Richard Reid tried to use before his arrest. It is very rarely seen in the US and is called “Mother of Satan” by Islamic extremists. **
Mark Tapscott has been all over this since Saturday, but is in meetings all day today, so he challenges us with this:
Has the NCAA been advised to take any security precautions since the OU bombing? Have any other schools with significant Muslim communities nearby or associated with the campus been advised to take security precautions since the OU bombing? Why did the FBI and Joint Terrorism Task Force take over the investigation so quickly if Hinrichs was merely a lone suicide? What else was found in Hinrichs’ apartment besides the bomb-making materials? Why does Hinrichs’ father have a lengthy list of former addresses? What about Hinrichs mother? Did Hinrichs travel outside the U.S. during his year out of school?
Go to it, bloggers!
And Michelle Malkin has a good-sized list of links, natch! Gotta keep an eye on this story, and consider this — if this is happening in the heartland, what is going on in the major cities? How many college football games have been targeted by the terrorist cells? It was easy to protect the Super Bowl after 9/11, but that was just a single game — each weekend there are dozens.
Keep aware, the life you save may be your own! (db)
[Update -- 2:30pm]
The Tulsa World reported this AM:
The Pakistani roommate of a man authorities say died when he detonated an explosive device outside a crowded football stadium was led in handcuffs from a party shortly after Saturday’s explosion, the head of an Islamic student group said.
Fazal M. Cheema, a finance major, shared a university-owned apartment with Joel Hinrichs III, 21, who died Saturday when a device attached to his body exploded as he sat on a bench outside George Lynn Cross Hall.
Cheema and three other Muslim students were led in handcuffs from a party by police after the blast, Ashraf Hussein, president of the Muslim Student Association, said Tuesday. They later were released.
Nothing else has been released that ties Hinrichs to any terrorists or terrorist movements. If the report that he attempted to purchase ammonium nitrate earlier in the week holds up over time, it will be harder to make a case that it was a simple suicide, and not an attempt at mass murder. Then, finding his motive will be of utmost importantance. (db)
[More Updates]
Mark Tapscott reports that the language being used by OU President and former U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence Chairman David Boren has transformed a bit, to where Boren is backing off the lone suicide moniker.
Clearly something has come to Boren’s attention since his initial declaration that has caused him to qualify his statement. Perhaps that something is to be found in the fact the latest official FBI statement says “at this time, there is no known link between Hinrichs and any known terrorists or extremists organizations or activities.”
The key phrase in the FBI statement is “at this time.” That suggests the FBI is keeping open the possibility that further investigation may yet turn up such links.
Mark also has an exclusive post detailing the contents of what is believed to be Hinrich’s car. (db)
