Reuters reports:

President George W. Bush on Monday nominated a member of his inner circle, White House counsel Harriet Miers, for a Supreme Court vacancy, choosing a woman with plenty of legal experience but who is not a judge to replace the retiring Sandra Day O’Connor.

Miers, 60, a longtime ally of Bush’s going back to his days as Texas governor, would be the third woman ever to serve on the Supreme Court. The others are O’Connor and a current justice, Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Can’t wait for Hugh’s show today! Here’s an excerpt from his blog post this AM.

The second President Bush knows Harriet Miers, and knows her well. The White House Counsel is an unknown to most SCOTUS observors, but not to the president, who has seen her at work for great lengths of years and in very different situations, including as an advisor in wartime. Leonard Leo is very happy with the choice, which ought to be enough for most conservatices.

Guess we’ll see just how many conservative do trust him! (db)
