The controversy over the memorial to honor the brave souls of Flight 93 that downed their aircraft before allowing the Islamic terrorists to fly it to Washington and crash it into our nation’s Capital building is still brewing. The AP reports:

The architect of the memorial to a plane downed in western Pennsylvania on Sept. 11, 2001, said Wednesday he would work to satisfy critics who complained that it honors terrorists with its crescent-shaped design.

Designer Paul Murdoch said he is “somewhat optimistic” that the spirit of the design could be maintained.

“It’s a disappointment there is a misinterpretation and a simplistic distortion of this, but if that is a public concern, then that is something we will look to resolve in a way that keeps the essential qualities,” Murdoch, 48, of Los Angeles, said in a telephone interview.

I loved it yesterday when Tammy Bruce — the gun-ownin’, cat-lovin’, Reagan-supportin’, lesbian, former-NOW-leader, KABC talk-show-host — called Murdoch out for his arrogance and elitism for considering the vast bulk of the American public as simplistic.

A report in the Johnstown, PA Tribune Democrat quotes the memorial’s superintendent:

‘It’s unfortunate,’ said Joanne Hanley, the Flight 93 memorial’s superintendent. ‘There is misinformation in the blog-o-sphere, and things are out of hand. There was no intentional meaning of Islam in the design.’

Hanley said Los Angeles architect Paul Murdoch is changing the name of his design from ‘Crescent of Embrace’ to ‘Arc of Embrace.’

Oh, that should really do it — Duh!

Memorials like this one and the one being considered for Ground Zero in New York should belong to the people, and be created for the people, not for gleaning the most accolades from elitist professionals. Screw the International design awards folks and create something that truly celebrates the courage and heroics of those passengers of Flight 93, and the First Responders to the World Trade Center. Anything less is not only stupid, but insufferably arrogant! (db)
