In Katrina’s Wake — The American Tsunami
I’m sitting here in front of the tube, reading blogs and watching the coverage of the devastation caused, and still being caused, by the Perfect Storm called Katrina. New Orleans dodged the death blow bullet, but when all the damage is tallied, it is going to be a huge disaster. Folks want to go home, but standing water is still a big problem, and a lot of those displaced refugees might not have a home to go back to.
New Orleans’ flooded areas are looking at weeks to over a month to get all the water pumped out, as many pumps have failed. This is a perfect scenario for disease. Only the really bad stuff thrives on conditions like these.
Mississippi and Alabama aren’t doing much better. Biloxi and Mobile took a big hit! What is hard to remember while sitting out here in comfortable Santa Monica temps is that this part of the country is in the dog days of Summer, with 100-110 plus degree heat and close to 100% humidity on a normal day, let alone with chest-to-sill high water covering lots of populated areas.
It’s going to take billions of dollars in relief aid and restoration funds. Hugh Hewitt is featuring Samaritan’s Purse for immediate relief, but is asking for bloggers help to raise funds for the cleanup and recovery. Okie is part of the blogging tail, but we will do whatever we can to get the word out. When Hugh gets this together, I’ll put up a post and a permalink in the sidebar.
Pray for the victims of Katrina. The next days and weeks are going to be rough out there! (db)
