Media Bias and the AP — Controlling the Wires
OK, I admit it — I’m slow to pick up on stuff sometimes. I knew from experience that the wire services don’t automatically send everything out to everyone. When the company that I was working for in the 90s was delivering press releases via our PR agency, we would pick the regions, and or types of syndication that would potentially reach those we were trying to inform about our goods and marketing efforts. Why I didn’t remember this yesterday when I was writing about the AP’s limited “regional” release of their article on the Air America funding scandal I don’t know. But it certainly showcases the pro-left media bias of AP. See this Radio Equalizer post for more details.
But what about other AP bias? Mark Tapscott writes today “WHAT IS GOING ON AT AP?” where he questions how fair & balanced the Iraq war reporting has been and finds it much less than either fair or balanced!
AP managers in New York got an earful recently from a bunch of editors beyond the Hudson River who wonder if the nation’s most widely used news service is telling the whole story about the War in Iraq and U.S. reconstruction efforts in that ancient land.(…)
Also, don’t miss his latest post: NYU Professor Proclaims Death of the Religion of Liberal Journalism. Kinda goes hand-in-hand.
Michelle Malkin has links to other bloggers writing about the AP war reporting bias.
Arthur Chrenkoff covers this topic with “MSM Does Iraq”, and is reporting that the AP is working on it.
Still, leaving the anti-Bush, anti-Republican, anti-military bias aside, even if the mainstream media can address other, more technical problems, it would go a long way towards rebalancing the Iraq coverage.
I guess it doesn’t stop with just the war coverage either. Lone Star Times illustrates some quote manipulations in the AP coverage of the Cindy Sheehan madness.
Note the curious ellipsis. As Matt Bramanti has cited, the full quote contains something else. Here’s her full statement – the bolded section is what AP omitted: “I told him I would take him to Canada. I told him I would run over him with a car, anything to get him not to go to that immoral war. And he said, ‘Mom, I wish I didn’t have to, but I have to go.”
And yet Cindy Sheehan things that the media is merely the propaganda arm for the government. It’s ridiculous – the media is actually covering up the fact that she would have risked killing her son to keep him out of the war, simply because she believed to be immoral.
The only way that you will ever be fully informed is if you scour the Internet for your news and commentary. It’s truly incredible when you realize how fully manipulated we have been via the MSM news outlets. As is currently being shown time and again, they just don’t have that power anymore — one would think that they would wake up to this fact sooner rather than later, but that doesn’t seem to be happening, at least not at a visible pace.
