Well, sort of. Buried way back in a regional section. From this AM’s New York Times:

Bronx Boys Club’s Finances Investigated — By ALAN FEUER — Published: August 12, 2005

The state attorney general’s office and the city’s Department of Investigation are looking into whether a boys and girls club serving poor children and ailing elderly people in the Bronx had improper financial dealings, including loans to the Air America radio network, state and city officials said yesterday.

The separate investigations are trying to determine whether the Gloria Wise Boys and Girls Club, run from an office in Co-op City in the Bronx, made improper loans of up to $875,000 to the radio network, known for its liberal programming and hosts like the comedian Al Franken, the officials said.
(…)

What can we say? — ’cause it’s about damn time! Hey, they even quote Al Franken from his Monday afternoon radio show commenting on Evan Cohen and why he might have done this thing:

“I don’t know why he did it,” Mr. Franken said, according to a transcript of the broadcast made by the Department of Investigation. “I don’t know where the money went. I don’t know if it was used for operations. I think he was borrowing from Peter to pay Paul.”

Or did they? Not according to Michelle Malkin’s post today, where she prints what Franken “actually” said on the show, backed up by links to audio clips on other blogs. What ol’ Al actually said was:

I don’t know why they did it, and I don’t know where the money went, I don’t know if it was used for operations [softer, especially fast], which I imagine it was. I think he was robbing Peter to pay Paul.

According to Michelle, the Times made edits to the online version of the story as well, removing a reference to one of her blog posts on the subject.

So, here’s the breakdown so far:

New York Times – one!
Washington Post – still no,
Chicago Tribune – not a chance,
Los Angeles Times – again, no way, Jose!

Macho Nachos says it well:

The good news is that the Times was only behind the Arizona Republic, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, The Oregonian, the Washington Times, the Sun, the Post, the Daily News, the Opinion Journal, Investors Business Daily and about a zillion blogs (with no editors!) on this story that almost exclusively happened within the confines of New York. It also makes you wonder, given the fact that papers from across the country beat them by several days, why this story was carried in the local/regional section. [Emph. mine]

Like I’ve said before, my interest in this story is based upon the blatant media bias being exhibited by those 4 major newspapers and the ABC, NBC & CBS television networks in their ignoring it. Anyone that is honest with themselves knows that if this involved any conservative group or on-air personality the screaming of righteous indignation from the left could be heard on the moon! Now that the NYTimes has opened the door a crack on this story, one has to ask why they felt compelled to alter Franken’s quote. According to an update on Michelle’s post, there has been a suggestion that Franken may have said it both ways during the length of Monday’s show. There are those listening to the whole thing so we should soon have a definitive answer. Sounds like torture to me — wonder if one could file for disability after that?

More when there’s . . . you know! (db)
