A Letter Sent to the Editor of the Los Angeles Times

Dear Editor, Los Angeles Times:

A story broke over 10 days ago in New York City concerning questionable loans of over $850,000 that were made to the “Air America” radio network by the Gloria Wise Boys & Girls Club in the Bronx. This story has been widely covered in the center-right Blogosphere, and there was an editorial on it in the Washington Times on Aug. 3rd, it was reported by the New York Sun on Aug. 5th and in the New York Post on the 6th.

With Friday’s announcement that NY State Attorney General Eliot Spitzer had opened an investigation into this issue, I am “intrigued” by the fact that you and your reporters do not consider this to be “news”. I would dare say that if the situation was a publicly funded children’s agency loaning money to any “iffy” conservative group or business venture, with no public disclosure of the terms of the loan and with no discernible value to the group for having made such a loan, it would be front page “news” for days, if not weeks. At least you can feel a bit consoled by the fact that the New York Times, Chicago Tribune and Washington Post evidently feel the same way about it that you do, as they have also not bothered to report on this to date.

The term “Air America” is the number 7 most searched term at the moment on Technorati. Yesterday it was number 5. Check it out — these bloggers aren’t writing about how great the programming is on AA. Like me, they are wondering why Air America and this questionable funding effort by its founder, Evan Cohen, are not being reported on by the “biggies”? Please do your job and report the news — ALL of the news. If you wait much longer on this story you’re gonna have to eat some major pie — and I’m not sure I can scrounge up that many crows!

Sincerely,

Arthur Baker

[Update]

Well, well — Mr. Atos at My Sandmen reports that the Oregonian “at least” printed associate editor David Reinhard’s commentary on the Air America scandal in today’s edition. Kinda reminds me a lot of how the LATimes reacted to Senator Durbin’s remarks comparing our military’s activities to that of the Nazis, Stalin and Pol Pot, by ignoring the whole thing, and with the first mention being 4 days later and in the form of a commentary by David Gelernter. It was a whole 6 days after Durbin’s remarks were made on the floor of the Senate before our rag of record finally “reported” this “news”. (db)
