Air America Funding Scandal — Foul Air?
August 5th, and even though the New York Sun broke this story today, the New York Times continues to be mute on the subject.
The Boys & Girls Club of America, a federation of nearly 1,200 affiliates across the country, may drop the Gloria Wise Boys & Girls Club in the Bronx from its ranks at a vote next month.
(…)
A recommendation to the national organization’s board of governors came out of a months-long investigation by the group, which a spokesman said was initiated before the city probe was announced in June. The spokesman, Evan McElroy, would not detail the findings of the federation’s investigation but said yesterday, “We do not drop an organization lightly. It’s very, very rare that it happens.” [Emph. mine]
Considering that it is such a big deal for the The Boys & Girls Club of America to think about dropping an affiliate club from its organization, and since this escalating brouhaha is over the questionable loaning of $850,000 by this club to the Liberal radio network Air America, and since this is all happening in New York City, wouldn’t it seem at least prudent for the the Gray Lady to at least have mentioned all this by now? Uhhhhh — perhaps we’ve caught a whiff of the stench of media bias?
D’ ya think?
The NYT is not alone in Liberal land. At Daily Kos and Josh Michaels Talking Points Memo, there are zero posts in the last two weeks that mention either “Gloria Wise” or “Air America”. Apparently, if you are a super-Liberal you can’t be bothered to call out your media darlings for taking the money from needy kids and seniors. What I’m really waiting for is, after this story finally breaks into the mainstream, in about another week/ten days, Howard Dean coming out and slamming rich Conservatives for somehow “causing” poor ol’ Evan Cohen to lose his mind and misappropriate funds from the B&G Club and give them to poor ol’ Air America.
Captain Ed Morrissey presents the legal approach to this mess, along with a step-by-step guide for investigative reporters to use in tracking the Benjamins.
The New York Sun’s David Lombino follows up today on the Air America scandal with news that the loan payback from Piquant Media has lost something in the translation — namely, the interest owed on it. Piquant Media finally agreed to pay back the $875,000 Evan Cohen misappropriated from Gloria Wise Boys & Girls Clubs for his own personal use and to fund Air America when the netlet seemed ready to collapse. They want to extend payments over two years, but Lombino reports that Piquant will not pay interest on what documents show was supposed to be a loan from Gloria Wise (emphasis mine):
Michelle Malkin has been covering this from the beginning and continues today:
Yesterday, on Your World with Neil Cavuto, commentator Bill Press stated repeatedly that the current managers of Air America bear no responsibility for the shady loan the network received from the Gloria Wise Boys & Girls Club because the money was stolen by former Air America chairman Evan Cohen. “The point I’m making is, this [loan] has nothing to do with the people who are now on the air on Air America, or that are now running Air America,” Press said. (…)
Be sure and check out the rest to see her list of five problems with the above reasoning plus a list of questions that should be answered about the funding process.
Someone’s Going to Jail
1. Who are the past and present owners, officers, management and directors/executives of Progress Media, Gloria Wise and Piquant?
2. Who of the above were advised/involved in any transactions between Gloria Wise, Progress Media and Piquant?
3. In any of these transactions were there any concerns about conflicts of interest, violation of self dealing regulations or “related party” laws? If so, what steps were taken to resolve them?
Maybe the real problem, the main reason the New York Times just can’t be bothered with investigating the Air America funding scandal is because its staff is busy right now — trying to dig up some dirt on Supreme Court nominee John Roberts’ childrens’ adoptions. Michelle has that covered too: here and here. What about the Los Angeles Times? They’re too busy reporting about Marilyn Monroe’s death, 43 years ago today. Now there’s some real-breaking news for ya! (db)
[update]
Major Mike at My Sandmen has a few choice words of his own for the MSM and “Air Smearmerica”!
Sphere ItI never want to hear “journalism” and “profession” in the same breath again. In today’s culture, the MSM couldn’t muster enough “professionalism” to float a rubber duck. When did they begin to think that they had the “right” to influence culture instead of reporting on it? To influence politics instead of reporting on it? To attack children instead of bloated comedians who steal from children?
