After having written last week a rather harrowing description of what would happen to downtown Los Angles if terrorists exploded a nuke just above the Bonaventure Hotel, and then just at week’s end China’s Maj. Gen. Zhu Chenghu threatened that 100 U.S. cities would be destroyed with nuclear weapons if we interfered in a Chinese invasion of Taiwan — today, Colorado Congressman Tom Tancredo used a Florida radio show, WFLA-AM, as a platform to threaten a U.S. nuclear response against Mecca if we are ever attacked with nukes by the Islamofascist extremists. Let me be blunt: There is no strategic value to bombing Mecca even after a devastating attack on the U.S. In fact, such an action would be a strategic blunder without historical parallel, except perhaps Hitler’s attack on Stalin. Anyone defending Tancredo’s remarks has got to make a case for why such a bombing would be effective.

Take down the Syrian regime? You bet. Replace the House of Saud? Fine. Bomb every nuclear facility in Tehran? Absolutely. The US would respond to a savage attack with fury –but purposeful fury. Bombing Mecca would be the opposite of purposeful fury.

And to top it all off, one of my SCBA blog buddies sends me an email linking to this item — a World Net Daily article with the subtitle “Captured documents, terrorists reveal bin Laden’s preferred dates, places for ‘American Hiroshima”.

I certainly hope, and do believe, that this last item is pretty far fetched — a great plot for techno-military-apocalyptic fiction, but highly unlikely to happen on August 6th — I mean we’re not on high-red-alert status, which we most definitely would be if a viable nuclear threat were afoot — don’t ya think?

Hugh is way right on this thing! Even if our cities are attacked with terrorist nuclear weapons, we will have to go after the supporters of those terrorists, not after their Islamic icons. The surest way to escalate this into a full-scale religious war would be to destroy Islamic religious sites like Mecca. Look at how they react to the mere touching of the Qur’an by an infidel. There’s over one-hundred-million Muslims in the world. We can’t afford to be in a position to have to kill them all, because it can’t be done — without destroying what makes us, US!
