Circumcision Reduces AIDS Risk — Why is MSM Ignoring This?

Dennis Prager is talking about today’s Wall Street Journal [subscription req.] front page article Circumcision Reduces AIDS Risk and is asking the question, “Why is the Main Stream Media (MSM) not covering this?” Good question! A Google search brings up 17,300 pages, but a Google News search comes up with only seven at 11:30 am PST with Newsweek and Slate the only “major” news entities represented.

Dennis’s take is that the anti-circumcision advocates on the Left have so skewed the thinking on this issue, and along with the Jewish religious connotations involved, that the MSM feels it is better to ignore these findings than to distribute this important information. Ie, it is politically incorrect to promote “circumcision” for any purpose, even for saving lives. Science Daily reports on the findings of the study, published in the Feb. 15 issue of The Journal of Infectious Diseases.

Uncircumcised men had a more than two-fold increased risk of infection per sexual act compared with circumcised men–one in 80 versus one in 200. Past studies have also found greater HIV infection risk for uncircumcised men. Unlike those studies, however, the present study was also able to take into account cultural characteristics that might be responsible for differences in sexual behavior. These differences could, in turn, account for differences in the risk of infection. But the researchers found that cultural differences in sexual behavior did not matter: when groups of men were excluded from the analysis based on ethnic or religious characteristics, the difference in probability of infection related to circumcision status did not change. Anti-circumcision groups will no doubt lambaste the results of this study. With Aids in Africa as one of the major items of discussion at this week’s G8 Summit, you’d like to think that something that might reduce the risk of aids infection by 1/2 would be The Hot Topic! My bet is that this will not even be mentioned, once.

Just another scenario wherein the Culture of Death reigns supreme . . .

[Update: 2:45 pm]
The San Francisco Chronicle actually features an article on this and here’s the “money quote”:

The study’s preliminary results, disclosed Tuesday by the Wall Street Journal, showed that circumcision reduced the risk of contracting HIV by 70 percent — a level of protection far better than the 30 percent risk reduction set as a target for an AIDS vaccine. [Emph. mine]

Now there’s a city that can sure use this information! (db)
