As hard as they have tried, the MSM has not been able to make a coherent case for their proposition that our GWOT prisoner facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba is a “hell on earth”. But as reported in The Washington Times, that didn’t stop Minority Whip Richard J. ["Dick"] Durbin, Illinois Democrat, from slandering our military on the floor of the Senate late Tuesday.

The Senate’s No. 2 Democrat has compared the U.S. military’s treatment of a suspected al Qaeda terrorist at the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay with the regimes of Adolf Hitler, Josef Stalin and Pol Pot, three of history’s most heinous dictators, whose regimes killed millions.

After reading the e-mail, Mr. Durbin said, “If I read this to you and did not tell you that it was an FBI agent describing what Americans had done to prisoners in their control, you would most certainly believe this must have been done by Nazis, Soviets in their gulags, or some mad regime — Pol Pot or others — that had no concern for human beings. Sadly, that is not the case. This was the action of Americans in the treatment of their prisoners.”

In using such stark language Tuesday night, Mr. Durbin was repeating a theme that the political left has used in recent months: making “torture” the defining issue in how Mr. Bush is waging the war against Islamic terrorism.
Mr. Durbin said, “I am confident, sadly confident, as I stand here, that decades from now, people will look back and say: ‘What were they thinking? America, this great, kind leader of a nation, treated people who were detained and imprisoned, interrogated people in the crudest way?’ “

Just like the enemy we are fighting, right Dick? Like them, we hack off detainees’ heads with dull knives, hang their burnt bodies from the Brooklyn Bridge, plant car bombs and IEDs all over their countries to kill the innocent, we slaughter hundreds, if not thousands and bury them anonomously in mass graves, we send the illegal, non-uniformed combantants to hard labor camps and work them to death???? Right, Dick? Just like the Nazis, the Soviets, the Cambodians? Right — You “DICK”!

According to Hugh Hewitt, the lefty blogs, led by the Daily Kos, are ecstatic.

TalkLeft first alerted us to the latest cause célèbre of the Right Wing Media Borg — the effort to defend torture at all costs. And caught in the crosshairs is Sen. Durbin, who had the unmitigated gall to call it like it is:

Yeah, “Like it is” as seen through the fog of the Fever Swamp. But what about the MSM coverage of Durbin’s speech? Nothing in the LA Times. Ditto the Washington Post. The New York Times proudly proclaims, Sen. Durbin Stands by Guantanamo Remarks to link to their article actually headlined, White House Castigates Durbin for Remarks. Weird! Cognitive dissonance at the NYT?
