Why is this Adult Stem Cell Story Not Being Widely Told?

Unless you visit or troll the Pro-Life Blogs website, you probably haven’t heard about the adult stem cell research results in Australia. Makes you wonder why the “Culture of Death” minions turn deaf ears on something that looks so promising, while at the same time hammer the airwaves with pleas to federally fund the killing of nascent human life. CNN reported this way back in March:

SYDNEY, Australia (CNN) — Australian scientists have found that stem cells taken from adults could have the same life-saving potential as those taken from embryos, a discovery that could potentially end the contentious debate over embryonic research.
(…)
Griffith University researcher Professor Alan Mackay-Sim said the study showed that olfactory stem cells could develop into heart cells, liver cells, kidney cells, muscle cells, brain cells and nerve cells. In addition the olfactory stem cells did not have the problems of rejection or forming tumors as is common with embryonic stem cells.

“Our experiments have shown adult stem cells isolated from the olfactory mucosa have the ability to develop into many different cell types if they are given the right chemical or cellular environment, Professor Mackay-Sim said, in research published on the Internet.

“These adult olfactory stem cells appear to have the same ability as embryonic stem cells in giving rise to many different cell types but have the advantage that they can be obtained from all individuals, even older people who might be most in need of stem cell therapies. Stem cells obtained and transplanted into the same person would not be rejected by the immune system,” he said.

Getting back to the article on the Australian research:

The Catholic Archbishop of Sydney, Cardinal George Pell, told The Australian newspaper that the research could provide a possible solution to the moral debate over embryonic research and said he would refer it to the Vatican.

Maybe that explains it. If the Catholic Church, or any Christian church for that matter, endorses something, to the secular left it must be evil incarnate. Those in favor of embryonic stem cell research (ESTR) seem to be saying, the cloned embryos used in research and therapies are not human at all, just clumps of non-differentiated not-really-living cells, devoid of inherent worth.

So, let’s pull this all together. According to embryonic stem cell research advocates, 1) therapies that require the destruction of human life, 2) have the very real possibility of causing rejection reactions and 3) have shown tendencies to create raging malignancies are good, while therapies that, 1) use your very own cell tissue, 2) require no destruction of living cells that could feasibly grow into a human beings and 3) have no rejection problems are not as good, and should be relegated to a lower priority than ESTR by scientists and funding governments. Geez! Orwell would be proud. What an upside down world we find ourselves living in. (db)
