Gentle Reminder of a Terrible Potential

The first thing I do online is check out Drudge. Today this is what I saw — White house and capitol building evacuated, fighters in the air — Now it’s all clear and the Drudge report is saying:

SMALL PLANE ‘OFF COURSE’ CAUSES RAW ALARM IN WASHINGTON… WHITE HOUSE, CAPITOL WERE EVACUATED; VP CHENEY RACES OFF IN LIMO, STAFF RUNS FOR THEIR LIVES; Guard in West Wing of White House shouted at reporters, ‘Go down into the basement’…’Leave, run’ security officers shouted to staff and reporters at the Capitol Building. ‘This is not a drill,’ guards shouted forced people away from the building… Officers rushed through Supreme Court told staff to get into the basement…

I looked at some video on FoxNews that showed the reaction of people in the city running away, after a low overhead pass by one of the fighters. All of this is a simple reminder that we are actually in a state of war with the Islamofasciasts, and that we must be ever vigilant and prepared for an attack.

After 9/11 everything changed. As much as we all would like to ignore this fact, we do so at our own peril. We have to be sensitive to who is among us and why, and what are their intentions. (Sorry guys, but it wasn’t 19 little old white grandmas that flew those planes into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon!) Domestic terrorists, and both left & right wing extremists, need to be kept on a very short lease, too. We don’t need another Oklahoma City event just because we have all our attention focused on our middle eastern buddies. I’m not promoting state-sponsored paranoia, just some judicious use of common sense in these matters. (The Leftist trolls that occasionally stumble into this blog will think I’m a raving loony, but do I write like I care? As my son-in-law says, if I’m wrong on this, I don’t want to be right!)

The fear of those challenged to protect all of us and our government is that a small plane, carrying a suitcase nuke, will successfully penetrate the downtown area of a major city or the capitol and detonate its payload. A strike such as this on the financial district of New York would be a crippling blow to the world’s economy, on D.C. it could annihilate our government. In Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco or Miami, it could kill hundreds of thousands, or maybe even more in one strike.

One of the techno-military novels that I read just after 9/11, Larry Bond’s Day of Wrath was about a Saudi prince gone radical Muslim, a leader of a world-wide corporation, that planned and executed a 20-plane attack, with each small commercial-aviation craft equipped with a stolen Russian thermonuclear device. The FBI, CIA and the heroes of the novel (of course) managed to stop all but one of them. Think about that for a sec.

Certainly made me think when I read it then . . .

I thought about this book again today . . .

Wish that I would never have an opportunity to think about it again . . .

But that truly would be just — wishful thinking. (db)
