Oklahoma City Bombing — Ten Years Ago Today

I didn’t realize that it had happened on April 19th. Ten years ago, I was sitting basically here, at my desk, at the computer working, before I lived on the Internet, before I had email — and then the phone rang. It was the now ex-wife of our cooking buddy, Woody.

Dale, quick! Turn on the TV. There’s been a bombing in Oklahoma City!

I did, there had been. And for the rest of the morning I sat and watched the continually repeated shots of the bombed out Alfred P. Murrah federal building. It was such a strange site, it was impossible to understand just how much damage had actually happened. It was also quite impossible to comprehend how many had died, how few, if any, would be found in the wreckage. A portent of things to come in NY on 9/11 ‘01, that’s for sure.

As an ex. pat. Okie, I felt compelled to mention this painful anniversary and honor the dead and the survivors of this terrible event. I feel gratitude to the investigators, prosecutors and jurors that convicted Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols, and to the justice system that eventually executed McVeigh. I relish the fact that he is no longer drawing air into his lungs and spewing hate out of his mouth.

A couple of quick asides. On that momentous day, I had an aunt and uncle that was supposed to be in the federal building for some reason or other, and they were lost, and late. God wasn’t ready for them to be gone from us, and he is using them still to his great will.

About four to six months later, I was home visiting and I took my son, 13 at the time, and video taped him at the site. All of the Murrah building remains had been cleared away, and the site leveled, but the collateral blast damage on all the buildings around the location was still unfixed and visible. That was also eerily precient of the visages of 9/11, and I still get a chill remembering that day, although I have never looked at the video we shot.
