China a Threat? — I Told You So!

One of my continuing themes is China as a threat to the safety and security of the United States. I’ve been over there quite a few times, and know others that have had a much longer association with the Chinese, and the consensus is that China has a long-term goal to be the biggest, baddest superpower of them all, and want complete control the world financially and militarily. They also have a long-term world view and will be very patient in their quest.

Today, the International Herald Tribune published a story about the U.S. Military beginning to worry about China as a probable military threat.

While the American military is consumed with wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, global terrorism, and the threat of nuclear proliferation in North Korea and Iran, China is presenting a new and strategically different security concern to America in the western Pacific, as well as to Japan and Taiwan, Pentagon and military officials say.

China, these officials say, has smartly analyzed the strengths and weaknesses of the American military and focused its growing defense spending on weapons systems that could exploit the perceived weaknesses in case the United States ever needs to respond to fighting in Taiwan.

And what did I tell you about China’s submarine warfare plans here, here and here? IHT agrees, and continues with:

This is because China now has a modernizing fleet of submarines, including new Russian-made nuclear subs that can fire antiship missiles from a submerged position. America would first need to subdue these submarines before moving ships close to Taiwan.

China launched 13 attack submarines between 2002 and 2004, a period when it also built 23 ships that can ferry armored vehicles and troops across the 160-kilometer-wide strip of water to Taiwan.

With the increasing U.S. deficit and our military being stretched thin in Afghanistan and Iraq, and who-know-where next, we must stay aware of what is going on in the far east and be prepared to counter Chinese military expansion. (db)

    I fear China’s intentions for Taiwan are going to explode into our consciousness just like Japan’s did years ago. Wasn’t it a Chinese general who said we wouldn’t stop their move against Taiwan because we wouldn’t trade Los Angeles for Taiwan?
