[Heads up: Instapundit]

Strategy Page has a story outlining China’s sneak attack plan for taking control of Taiwan.

China is apparently planning an “out-of-the-blue” (OOTB) attack on Taiwan, that will initially consist mainly of missiles, warplanes, paratroopers and troops out on “training exercises”. What this means is that, during what appears to be peacetime maneuvers, the troops involved will suddenly move against a nearby nation and invade.

Great! Imagine the scenario. One of these months real soon, while training exercises are afoot, a full scale assault on the island of Taiwan is carried out by the mainland Chinese, catching the Taiwanese and the U.S. mostly off guard. Taiwan’s defenses are destroyed, and the U.S. is completely locked out of the Taiwan Straight making it even harder to put pressure on North Korea. There would be much death and destruction on the island, with a complete disruption of business between Taiwan and the West.

The U.S., unable to respond in time to save the island from being overrun, suspends diplomatic relations and economic ties to the mainland and goes to the UN Security Council asking for stiff sanctions. The Japanese scramble to get themselves on a war footing, now fearing for their security. Lacking outlets for their goods, China is forced to increase trade with Iran and other middle eastern countries. If the Chinese have established naval bases on the Indian Ocean coastline by the time of the Taiwan attack, they could attempt to disrupt trade routes and the U.S. Navy’s free travel in the Indian Ocean and the Persian Gulf.

Sounds like a Clancy novel. Hope he’s not writing this one, his track record is too spot-on! (db)
