Adieu to Johnny Cochran: 1937 – 2005
It’s just been announced that renowned defense attorney Johnnie L. Cochran Jr. has died of an inoperable brain tumor at his home here in Los Angeles. Famous for his defense efforts that effected the acquittal of O.J. Simpson in his 1996 double murder trial.
After Simpson, Cochran stepped out of the criminal trial arena, concentrating instead on civil matters. For a time, he represented high-profile athletes and music stars in contract matters.
He remained a beloved figure in the black community, admired as a lawyer who was relentless in his pursuit of justice and as a philanthropist who helped fund a UCLA scholarship, a low-income housing complex and a New Jersey legal academy, among other charitable endeavors.
I’m not sure why I’m posting about this. Maybe it’s because we live so close to Brentwood and the Nicole-Brown Simpson, Ron Goldman murders terrified the whole Westside until we figured out who must have committed them. Godspeed, Johnnie. If we had needed a lawyer, we have wanted you! (db)
