The Groningen Protocol – Fighting for Survival
I received this email today from Lionel Roosemont in Germany Belgium. It was sent to my Okieboy email address, so he has either read my previous posts on the Groningen Protocol or has contacted me via my info at Pro Life Blogs.
Dear Friend,
The Groningen Protocol is now becoming a test case for the whole of Europe. For that reason my wife Renate and I have been asked to testify about our life with our severely brain damaged daughter Tikvah. We have already been interviewed on several occasions by tv-stations in Belgium, Holland, Germany and Poland about abortion and Euthanasia, because under high pressure by professors, we refused to abort our daughter in the 7th month of pregnancy, although we were repeatedly told she had no chances to survive until birth.
Today people advise us to kill (it’s called euthanasia) our child, who is now 9 years old. We hope and pray that the interview will be balanced. It will be broadcasted by the German ARD (Das Erste) in the program ‘Europamagazin’ on Saturday at 16.30hrs (CET).
If the Groningen Protocol will prevail (everything looks like it) it will open the door in Europe to more extreme acts. Here in Belgium for instance Euthanasia can be obtained by people with depression after 1 month of depression. A very influential group of politicians will make a lawproposal to have euthanasia for children from the age of 12 years.
Friendly greetings,
Lionel Roosemont
What the Roosemonts have been going though for over nine years is tragic. I remember as a boy, going to visit at my second cousin’s house, where his youngest brother was severely handicapped. Although the boy lived into his teens, he never progressed beyond infant hood in mind development, and his body never grew completely. A true tragedy for this family, however they loved and cared for him until his natural death. Devoutly Christian, they would never have had a doctor “kill” that child just to make their lives easier, and yes, their lives would have been much easier. For the most part, life just isn’t meant to be “easy”.
We must stop the encroachment of the “Culture of Death” in American society. Terry Schiavo’s situation goes critical in two more days. The Anchoress is blogging about Terry here and here and Michelle Malkin has comments on the pending federal legislation that could pass by tomorrow that would prevent the doctors from removing Terri’s feeding tube, plus more links to blogs about Terry.
Keep Terri, and the Roosemonts in your prayers. If we continue to slide down this slippery slope, sometime in the future it just might be “you” they come to “kill”! (db)
[Update: 3:45 pm]
The Roosemonts are anti-euthanasia activists that have been petitioning the government of Belgium since 2000 to not allow this as a lawful practice. Most of the web pages available on them are in Dutch, German or French, but the Roosemonts are mentioned in this article on euthanasia posted on the Concerned Women for America website and I’m quite sure that I have found a picture of their daughter at “Goed Nieuws”, which must translate to “Good News” — and it looks like it is. Hugh Hewitt shares his thoughts on the Terri Shiavo crisis and post a link to this NationalReview.com article by Father Robert Johansen on the failures of Terri’s husband and her medical team. (db)
