Pray for Terri Schiavo
[Updated: 2/22/05 — The judge has issued a one-day stay of his order to remove Terri's feeding tube, but according to the Anchoress, her husband is not going to honor the stay. She has more to say as well:
All of the avenues of man are drying up. What do you do? You appeal to the Highest Judge. Prayer and fasting have undone bigger things than this. Pray. Fast. Sacrifice. Offer it all up for Terri's intention.
What more? She directs us to Stones Cry Out for more coverage and to Catez Stevens whose blog Allthings2all has an extensive grouping of links and suggestions to continue in the struggle to save Terri.
They (Terri's parents) haven't given up and are continuing to use the legal process and publicity to try and prevent the execution of their disabled daughter by slow starvation.
Apparently Jeb Bush's hands are not tied either, although he has yet to intervene this time. See this article Jeb Bush Could Save Terri Schiavo's Life...If He Wanted by Florida Radio Host Doc Washburn.]

The dramatic legal battle over the life of a severely disabled woman hinges Tuesday on what, if any, instructions a Florida appeals court gives on when her feeding tube can be removed and her death can begin. The attorney representing Terri Schiavo’s husband Michael said Monday her husband will act as soon as legally permissible in having physicians remove the feeding tube that has kept her alive for 15 years.
Last week at a blogger luncheon we discussed the Terri Schiavo conundrum and came to the conclusion that it doesn’t look like much can be done for her, at least in regards to keeping her alive. Her husband is determined to have her feeding tube removed, effectively killing her in the next few weeks, and her parents have struggled valiantly to keep him from doing so. He wants to be free of the burden of a wife that has been in a quasi-vegetative state for over 15 years, and they do not want to let their daughter go.
Although Terri’s was not a pleasant situation to consider before, with the awakening last week of the woman that had been in a coma for 20 years, it has become worse than confusing. The moral implications of starving her to death for the convenience of her husband have been raised to a much higher bar. That he wants her dead, instead of just walking away and leaving her care to her parents, who are more than willing to provide it, says much. Regardless of rumor and innuendo, this does not seem to be a good guy.
Tomorrow the court could make their final decision, and her feeding tube could be removed, and she would begin starving to death. According to the law, it will be legal so it won’t be murder. According to all that is holy, it is at the very least killing, and might just be murder. At our luncheon the question was asked whether one can pray for something bad to happen to someone, ie Terri’s husband. If he is truly evil, imprecatory prayer is an option. But there’s the rub. Is he an evil man, thinking only of himself, or is he also a victim of the situation?
Based upon themes in the bibical story of two women that claimed motherhood of the same baby, I think that King Solomon would be inclined to allow Terri to live and be taken care of by her parents, while absolving her husband of any responsibility now, or in the future for her care or any expenses incurred in pursuit thereof. However, her husband does seem like the kind that would be satisfied with walking away with half a baby.
If Terri Schiavo’s life is forfeited, she will join a long line of martyrs for just causes. We are struggling in this society to stay upright on the slippery slope of euthanasia. The Groningen Protocol in the Netherlands last fall, wherein doctors are making the decision to kill babies, was an early wakeup call. Terri’s situation is the shrieking of the alarm after our hitting the snooze button several times too many!
Pray for Terri Schiavo. That is really all that we can do, now. (db)
