Ward Churchill – Next to Go?
Having called the victims of the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon “little Eichmanns”, University of Colorado professor Ward L. Churchill has been at the forefront of controversy all last week. First he was prevented, and then later, allowed to make a speech Tuesday evening at the University of Colorado in Boulder, where he is a tenured professor of ethnic studies. There, according to the LATimes, he “gave a fiery speech, chastising college officials, calling journalists “punks” and refusing to apologize for anything he had said”. He has since been under fire from Colorado Republican Gov. Bill Owens, who has called for his firing, and from the college’s interim chancellor, who has been investigating whether Churchill has committed academic fraud, a firing offense.
According to today’s LATimes, information is coming forward that appears to bolster the charges that Churchill has committed “academic fraud”.
Several professors have alleged that in his writings, Churchill distorted events surrounding a smallpox outbreak among Indians in North Dakota, as well as the facts concerning requirements for tribal identity.
“If you read his writings, you will find extremist Indian nationalist ideologies and claims of history that just don’t feel right,” said Thomas Brown, an assistant professor of sociology at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas, who has researched Churchill’s work.
He has also been accused of misrepresenting himself as having American Indian blood in order to secure his position of professor of ethnic studies and to receive tenure. The LATimes continues:
Churchill has claimed membership in the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokees, but leaders say he has no affiliation with them.
On Friday, Chad Smith, principal chief of the 250,000-member Cherokee Nation, said there was no evidence of Churchill having Cherokee heritage and that he was not eligible for citizenship.
“The best evidence that he is not an Indian is that he knows so little about Indians,” Smith said. “Indians are superpatriots; this is our land. Brian Moss, one of our citizens, was killed in the Pentagon on 9/11, and he disparages these victims.”
In a 1978 application for a lecture position in Native American studies at the University of Colorado, and again in a 1990 application to be an associate professor, Churchill claimed to be American Indian.
Now, I don’t care if this leftist blow hard is a Cherokee Indian or not. What I do care about is that there are far too many “Churchills” in our nations colleges and universities. Unknowing parents spend $20,000 – $30,000 a year sending their sons and daughters off to supposedly get a “higher education”, only to have them subjected to leftist-bias brainwashing, and outright fabrication and lies by the likes of this guy! I’ll let one of the university’s regents sum it all up from a LATimes quote:
“Academic fraud concerns me a great deal,” said university Regent Patricia Hayes. “I believe in tenure, but I also believe we have to do a good job as far as making sure his credentials are in order. The important thing is if he lied on his resume, not if he is an Indian.”
Time to give this “Man Called Horse” wannabe the boot! (db)
