Help me, somebody!
OK, I was surfing around last night and did a Google search for Doug Giles and followed a link to Media Matters for America, a left wing media watch dog group. After reading a posting about how “conservative” Chris Matthews of Hardball is, I just had to throw in my two cents worth. I mean, Chris is a conservative? In what demented world is that a reality?
Well, a few posts later in their forum on this topic and it’s going pretty good over there. I got a few of them stirred up enough to try defending late term abortion. Here is one of their responses.
Try calling all the obstetritians (sic) and women’s health clinics in your phone book. Tell that your girlfriend is 7 months pregnant and has decided she didn’t want to have her baby. Ask them if they’ll perform the procedure that you described. (em mine)
Anyone that wants to can go over there and give me a hand! . . . db
Update: Latest arguments over there –
Re: What campaign was Chris Matthews watching?
“You are describing someone trying to give birth to a viable baby pre-full term with the intention of having it live. That is not late term abortion. In abortion, the baby dies. Notice I did NOT say it was murdered. That’s an important distinction!”
Except she had an early C-section not sure if the baby would survive.
Okay, well if you want an example that I can think of, but don’t know to be true (and sorry, it’s been a long day, don’t feel like looking it up):
How many medications are not safe to take while pregnant? Not sure? Well, as a woman who doesn’t have 100% health, my doctor is always asking me if I am pregnant or planning to be every time he writes a new prescription. Why? Because so many drugs can literally turn my baby into “a blob” (my doctor’s words, not mine). So, what if I’m 3 months pregnant, but only just find out (trust me, this is possible). So, the condom broke (I tried to be careful due to the drugs), the pill didn’t work (lessened effect due to the drugs) and I now have a blob in my tummy. What do I do? Give birth to a dead blob (which, btw could cause repurcussions in my next pregnancy), or abort?
Don’t think it’s possible? You haven’t talked to enough women.
My response:
WE are obviously not discussing the same procedure. Also, I was describing it as performed in China. Here is the US procedure.
Step 1 — Guided by ultrasound, the doctor grasps the baby’s leg with surgical forceps.
Step 2 — The doctor inverts the baby’s into breach position, and then pulls him/her into the birth canal.
Step 3 — The doctor delivers the baby’s entire body, except for the head. He/she takes a pair of metzenbaum scissors, and jams them into the base of the baby’s skull. He/she opens the scissors to form a hole, inserts a suction catheter, and removes the baby’s brain.
“When you’re a doctor who does these abortions and the leaders of your movement appear before Congress and go on network news and say these procedures are done in only the most tragic of circumstances, how do you think that makes you feel? You know they’re primarily done on healthy women and healthy fetuses, and it makes you feel like a dirty little abortionist with a dirty little secret. I think we should tell them the truth, let them vote and move on. In the vast majority of cases, the procedure is performed on a healthy mother with a healthy fetus that is 20 weeks or more along. The abortion-rights folks know it, the anti-abortion folks know it, and so, probably, does everyone else.” — Ron Fitzsimmons, Executive Director for the National Coalition of Abortion Providers The New York Times, February 26, 1997
I agree with Mr. Fitzsimmons, there should be a referendum on the abortion issue. The tragedy of Roe vs. Wade was that the judiciary stepped in and stopped the national debate before the “people” could decide via their vote. The same thing happened in the 2000 election, (bet you wouldn’t expect me to say that!) If the Supreme Court had put the election back on the Florida Supreme Court and the recount had been done, Bush would have still won Fl. and the Electoral College. Even though he would not have won the popular vote, it would have been a more easily accepted result by the majority of thinking folks, as it would have been constitutional. Jucidial interference has caused these quagmires and others, that most likely will not be settled for some time.
Maybe none of us will change our minds on this issue, but it never hurts to argue one’s point of view to the other side, and to think about what is presented back to you. Thanks for all the passionate arguments. It’s been good. Back to work!
